Transcript of Shannen Koostachin

To briefly describe this book, it's about Shannen at the age of thirteen years-old and the people of Attawapiskat which is a Cree community in Northern Ontario, who have been fighting for a new school since the late 1970s when a fuel spill contaminated their school. Also, her and the students make a YouTube video about the poor conditions, and their hope for a decent school gets them attention and support from community leaders especially, children around Ontario. Then students decide to turn their grade-eight class trip into a visit to Ottawa to speak to the Canadian government. When they get there Shannen speaks passionately to the politicians about the need to give Native children the chance to succeed. Then out of nowhere when summer arrives Shannen is nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize. Her passion and dedication makes politicians stand up and realize the issues that are occurring. Unfortunately Shannen will never see her dream fulfilled.
