BY SONAM AND CARLOS CONCEPTS OF MOMENTUM AND IMPULSE APPLIED TO ICE HOCKEY As you might have seen in the video ice hockey is a really fast paced game where players make decisions in a blink of an eye. Most if not all of the decisions they make involve momentum. Stopping, starting, increasing or decreasing speed, and shooting all involve Newton's laws, momentum and impulse. ICE HOCKEY Let’s start off by watching a quick clip from a game of the CANUCKS for those of us who might not watch the game Ice hockey is characterized as one of the most brutal forms of hockey. So the protective equipment the players wear is extremely important to minimize the impact of a hit. Hockey players have to gear up with a helmet, elbow pads, shoulder pads, protective pants, gloves and shin pads. In helmets the hard outside and soft padded inside help absorb the shock so that your head won’t. For the rest of the protective gear the force of impact is lessened because of the strength of the outside of the pads, and the soft and cushion effect of the inside of the pads so that a hit does not hurt as much. Overall the hard outside and soft inside help increase the time of the impact and lower the force of the hit. STOPPING- When skating on ice a player stops by creating their own friction by digging the side of his/her skates into the ice. By doing so, one goes against the inertia of wanting to keep moving. The more momentum that an object has, the harder it is to stop. Therfore it would require a greater amount of force or a longer amount of time or both to bring such an object to a stop. As the force acts upon the object for a given amount of time, the object's velocity is changed; and the object's momentum is changed. COLLISIONS IN ICE HOCKEY Ice hockey involoves a lot of collisions whether it be the hockey stick and the puck, two players or any other two masses colliding. Elastic collisions are where masses collide but do not become one and start moving at the same speed, rather they kind of bounce off each other or stop. Friction still applies in ice hockey because of the contact between the ice and the skates. Therefore the law of conservation does not apply in ice hockey. Shooting-By transferring their weight from their back foot to their front, and by rotating their torso, a hockey player generates a significant amount of momentum while shooting a slap shot. By doing this the player is able to apply a greater force on the puck. A greater force applied results in a greater change in momentum and a more powerful shot. EQUIPMENT The Puck The puck has a lot of force added to it when it is shot by a player so it experiences a lot of changes in speed resulting in changes in momentum. The flat surface of the puck is also very good because it slides easily on ice. But this also leads to a disadvantage because a puck moving at high speed is a threat to a player if he/she is hit. So this is where the protective equipment comes in to help the player from a possible injury and is effective most of the time. The puck is also frozen before every game, freezing the puck leads to many advantages. One of the major advantages of all is that since there is now ice sliding on ice rather then rubber sliding on ice there is less friction. The less friction is a real help to players because the puck moves on ice a lot easier with them not having to apply as much force compared to if it was not frozen.
