Transcript of The Space Race

The Space Race Russia v. U.S. The U.S. Retaliates Luna 2 and Yuri Gagarin That same year, Eisenhower created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), dedicated to space exploration. In 1959, the Soviets launched a space probe that reached the moon called Luna 2. The US makes Explorer I, an artificial satellite. Also, in 1961, a Soviet, Yuri Gagarin, was the first human ever to orbit the Earth. Mariner 4 The Americans get a space probe that flies past Mars. Soviets Attempt to Fight Back 1970: The Soviets Venera 7 lands on Venus 1971: Soviets build first manned space station and Mars 3 drops capsule on Mars The United States, Victor of the Space Race 1973: The U.S. Pioneer 7 sent towards Jupiter. 1975: The U.S. and Soviets launched their first joint space mission. THE SPACE RACE A major area they competed in was science and space exploration, beginning with the Russian space satellite Sputnik. During the Cold War, the United States and Russia had a competition since they both were superpowers. Russia v. U.S. Sputnik Sputnik was the first ever unmanned satellite above the Earth's atmosphere. Sputnik raised tensions because the U.S. felt as if they were falling behind to the Soviets. Code Corona The US created a secret project made to spy on the Soviets and allies through orbiting satellites. The organizations involved in this were the CIA, the Air Force, and a new organization called the National Reconnaissance Office. The American Effort (Falls Behind... Again) The Americans send Alan Shepard into space making him the first American to go there. (He did not orbit) In 1962, the Americans finally orbit a man around Earth, John Glenn, Jr. They also got a satellite, Mariner 2, to fly past Mars. The First Woman Goes to Space! Valentina Tereshkova goes into space as the first woman for the Soviets. The Apollo Program The Americans began working on a new program, project Apollo. They were working to get a lunar probe to land on the moon. NASA's budget had been increased over 500% by then and 34,000 employees worked for the space exploration part of NASA while 375,000 employees worked as industrial and university contractors for NASA. The U.S. and Soviets Face Setbacks Three astronauts were killed when their spacecraft caught fire during a flight simulation of project Apollo. The Soviets lunar landing program was slowed down due to internal conflict and the untimely death of Sergey Korolyov. Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 December 1968: The launch of Apollo 8 was the first manned space mission to orbit the moon. July 1969: Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins set off on the Apollo 11 lunar landing space mission. July 20: Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. (U.S. effectively secures win of space race.) Sources: http://www.history.com/topics/space-race
