India and Pakistan become independent countries and enter the modern era. Both possess nuclear weapons and suffer from religious tension among their Muslim and Hindu populations.

US immigration cancels racial qualifications and restores naturalization rights. Welcomes 170,000 Asians yearly.
1990
Muslim separatist groups begin campaign of violence in Kashmir.
1992
