Black Crook was the first musical ever. It came to Broadway in 1866. The show opening night lasted 5-1/2 hours long. The audience didn't even care because it was too dazzled to complain
A musical has a plot (story), singing, dancing. When they sing and dance in the musical, the story advances, it keeps going.

First musical to have a serious story. It talked about racial prejudices of the times.
