he most important factor in effective teaching. John Hatti .40 Hattie says that teachers should
ask themselves, "how many of
the kids in your classroom are
prepared to say, in front of
class, 'we need help', we don't
know what's going on', or ' what
have you learned?" This sort of
trust, he says, is rare I need help!! The most effective strategy of all
is giving regular feedback and
fostering an atmosphere of trust
- these are qualities within the
reach of every teacher to improve
on. Students control over learning makes

Primary student the effect-size is 0.01 Homework has the same ES
as the teacher visiting
the children at home. Average If you tell a child to
do their best then they
wont reach new hights • An effect size of 0.5 is equivalent to a one grade leaps.
• An effect size of 1.0 is equivalent to a two grade leaps.
• ‘Number of effects’ is the number effect sizes from well designed studies that have been averaged to produce the average effect size.
• An effect size above 0.4 is above average for educational research .40 Feedback Hattie has made clear that ‘feedback’ includes telling students what they have done well (positive reinforcement), and what they need to do to improve(corrective work, targets etc), but it also includes clarifying goals.
