Why Athens is better than Sparta In Athens, an understanding of the world and the arts is just as important as military strength. Yet in both Persian wars, Athens led the two major battles that led to the defeat of the Persia. The battle of Marathon and the Battle of Salamis. In Marathon, outnumbered 3 to 1, Athenians killed 6,000 persians while only losing 194 of their army. In Salamis, the fleet led by the Athenians, which was greatly outnumbered once again, destroyed the Persian fleet. The only major battle that Sparta led, the battle of Marathon, ended in defeat. Athens is the unquestioned leader in discovery and has some of the greatest minds of their time. Plato , Aristotle, and Socrates, what does Sparta have, a great warrior who died in 4 years? Athens is known as the birthplace of democracy, and the cradle of civilization. Sparta may be a great military force, but what impact did it make on the world? nothing. Who sounds better? Athens of course
