The definition for THEME:
A specific subject in a piece of writing.
The Main Difference
The main difference between theme and topic is that topic is the specific subject throughout a piece of writing and theme is the main idea/central idea or the authors message.
Example: The topic of an essay could be fish but the theme would be the fish.
The main idea of a piece writing, the message throughout a story, central idea.
Example
The topic of an essay could be fish but the theme would be the sea.
