climbing such as... Climbing shoes Carabiners Anchors Crash Pads Atc's Rope Harnesses Chalk Carabiners are always used in rock climbing. You use them to clip onto your end of the rope during a climb, and the belayer even uses them too. The most common carabiner used in climbing is a twist and pull carabiner. Ropes are another important piece of equipment, which are almost always used in rock climbing. One type of climbing rope is called dynamic rope. This rope stretches when you fall to absorb the impact. Another kind of rope is called dry rope. Dry rope is mostly used outdoors because its stays intact longer and is more durable. Anchors are used in climbing to keep the belayer on the ground in case the climber falls. Anchors can often be something as simple as a rope drilled into the ground, or a loop around a tree. ATC represents Air Traffic Control. Belayers use them to keep the rope between themselves and the climber as tight as possible by taking in the slack as the climber climbs. They are attached to the belayer by their harness. Rock climbing shoes are extremely different compared to a regular sneaker. Climbing shoes have a hard rubber bottom and a pointed toe, so they can be wedged into smaller areas. There are also multiple different kinds of climbing shoes, verlcro, laces, and slip on shoes are the three kinds of climbing shoes. Harnesses are a climbers life line. They can't climb safely without them. They are worn above the waist and snug, but not too tight. Keeping your harness clean is also important. Storing a harness in a bag without any other dirt or chalk is a good idea becuase anything loose can get ground into the materials of the harness and cause it to deteriorate. Chalk is very helpful when climbing. It keeps hands dry and gives good traction. There are three types of chalk... Block Chalk Loose Chalk Liquid Chalk Block chalk is popular only becuase it is cheap. It does't absorb water well which makes hands slippery. Loose chalk is the number one chalk. It absorbs sweat and water well and is relativly cheap. Most climbers carry it in a sack around their waste so they can access it during a climb. Liquid chalk is very effective, but also very expensive. It stays on hands easily and abosrbs sweat and water. It is applied like lotion but dries to your skin after it is exposed to the air. Crash pads are used when bouldering. As your body scales the wall the pad stays under you in case you fall. The pads are made out of a thick foam and can be moved. Gri-Gri Gri-Gri's are another type of a belay device that serves the same purpose as an ATC. The Gri-Gri is commonly used becuase it has an auto-locking part. One thing that keeps climbing exciting is your skill level. Believe it or not, climbing isn’t just dragging your body up a rock wall; it takes practice and skill to be considered a good climber. To work on skill level work on your process of thinking and try to increase your climbing difficulty level. Process of Thinking Climbing Difficulty One thing that makes a good climber is their process of thinking. When their on the rock wall with their muscles straining it’s not always a good idea to just grab a random hold. They have to put time and thought into how it will affect them. Most climbers plan their path before they start climbing so they have a plan and goal. Climbers often look at the difficulty of a path first. One way to find out what path they should be climbing is to look at the YDS grading. YDS stands for Yosemite Decimal System. Most indoor climbing walls have this . It is a decimal grade showing the difficulty of the climb, the higher the decimal the harder the climb. Technique is what makes you a good climber. When a good climber climbs they look for rests, and how to control their energy investment. When you climb its like putting on a show for yourself. You always want to see what you can do and test your limits. Types of Climbing When you climb there are many different ways and techniques to learn. Most rock climbers use one technique, or method of climbing. A few of the types of climbing are: Static Climbing Dynamic Climbing Outdoor Climbing Indoor Climbing Bouldering Sport Climbing Static climbing is a method of climbing that is based off of pure muscle. When you static climb you look graceful because you have to climb slowly and with control. To do this you have to keep your hips in close to the wall for balance, and only move a limb when your core is balanced which takes a lot of effort. Dynamic climbing is the opposite of static climbing, it is more impulsive. Climbing dynamically has a little more momentum than static climbing. Most people climb this way when they are running on their last bit of energy and trying to accomplish the path. One common dynamic move is called a dyno. This move is used a lot and looks very good when you do it correctly. Dynos are when you balance your weight, and push off the rocks to leap through the air to get to your next destination. Bouldering is a type of training for when you actually start to go out on your own to climb outdoors. Bouldering is without a harness or ropes, just your chalk, crash pads, shoes, and the wall. When you boulder you get to work on your technique while testing your skill level. Because you don’t use your harness during bouldering you can set up a crash pad. Outdoor climbing gives climbers the chance to be creative and picture their own paths. They also need to know how to use the right equipment, so when they do climb they can be safe and protected. Sport climbing is another fun and competitive way to climb. You are always pushing your muscles a little further and testing your limits. To most sport climbers they try to focus on reaching the top of their path rather then their skills, they just want to push through everything to feel accomplished. Indoor climbing is a good place to start your climbing adventures. Climbing indoors is a way to learn technique. Indoor climbing lays out the paths and difficulites so worrying about how to access a rock is not a problem. The anchors and belay devices are also set up. Rock
Climbing By Kate Barland Climbing began in the 18th century in Europe.The following century was referred to as "the golden age of climbing" by the end of the 19th century climbing clubs had been organized. Washington D.C Of course every year swift house has its anual trip to Washington D.C where each student has to create a project and take their learning to the next step. 8th graders however get it good, we don't have to create a whole extra topic on top of our 8th grade challenge we just have to connect our topic. So i connected my topic to general fitness and met with a republican and democrat to hear their views and opinions on the general fitness of america. The Republican The democrat My goal was to meet with Congressman Aaron Schock, the fittest congressman. However he informed me that he was terribly sorry that he would be out of town. So instead I with his personal assistant Kelly Ripp. She was helpful and informed me about Aaron's summer challenge project. This is his main step in getting our nation into shape. The project consists of eating habbits and mini excercises that you can do. However this is Aaron's main way of showing his helping with America's obesity epidemic. You can tell he takes it to a very personal level becuase he has joined the childhood obesity caucus. Also, Kelly explained to me that having our nation be healthier can expand their life and with less health issues too.This could help with the health care problems. The democrat that I met with was Vermont's very own representative Peter Welch. However, he was also far too busy to meet with me so instead I met with his perosnal assitant Julia Drost. Walking into Peter's office was like walking through a portal back to Vermont. Peter believed that one way to help the obesity rate go down is to start with the new generations. Influence them to pick up a stick outside instead of the remote inside. Although Peter Welch may not be the fittest of all people he is still inclined to finding new ways to make kids want to excercise.
