Romance
What does it have to do with Fanfic?
Believe it or not, but most fanfiction is actually romance! May it be canon or noncanon, slash or femslash, AU or RPS. Today, we delve into the deep, and quite weird at times,
"Romance of Fanfiction".
Femslash
When two female characters are shipped together in either a canon or noncanon relationship.
And it's "Romantic" side
By: Alex Taranto

Real Person Slash:
Real Person Slash is when fans "ship"
real people together, usually actors or actresses from their favorite show or movie.

Canon RPS
These RPS ships are usually noncanonical, but some RPS ships ARE canon! Some examples of canon RPS's are;
Jared Padalecki and Genivieve Padalecki
PewDiePie and CutePie
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama
Alex Pettyfer and Dianna Agron
Noncanonical RPS
Noncanonical RPS ships are people that fans ship
together, but in reality, are either in a relationship
with another person or they are not the shipped
sexuality. Some examples of Noncanonical RPS's are;

FreeBatch- Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch
Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
ANY 1Direction MEMBER and 1D fan
Jacksfilms and Olga Kay

PewDiePie and CutePie, Boyfriend and Girlfriend Youtubers
Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins though very, very close friends, are not in a relationship. They are both happily married, with children :)
F/M:
F/M, or Female/Male, is a fanfic that contains a romantic relationship between a man and a woman. But remember, these are not ships of real-life people, but characters.
Noncanonical F/M
F/M, like RPS, also has Canon and Noncanon ships. Some examples of noncanon F/M ships are:
Clintasha- Hawkeye (Clint Barton) and Black Widow (Natasha Romanov)[This depends on media source] - Marvel
Hikaru and Haruhi - Ouran High School Host Club
Harry and Hermione - Harry Potter
Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler - Sherlock (BBC)
Emma Swan and Captain Hook - Once Upon a Time

Canon F/M
Canon F/M fanfiction is between female and male characters that are "together" in their original movie, TV show, book, etc. Here are some examples of canon F/M ships;
Pepper Pots and Tony Stark - Iron Man
Beau and Teddy - Good Luck Charlie
Kyo and Tohru - Fruits Basket
Xander and Cordelia - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Austin and Ally - Austin and Ally
Kyoru, the ship between the two Fruits
Basket anime characters, Kyo Sohma and
Tohru Honda was finally made canon in the
last episode of the anime, and was continued
in the manga series.
M/M Slash:
M/M or Male/Male fanfiction is the pinnacle of Romance fanfiction. The father of the whole Slash genre, this is where fans ship two men in a romantic relationship. Though this LGTB supportive writing is controversial, it still remians one of the most popular genre's.
Partial-Canon
Now, this is a little different from the other bubbles, now I'm going to talk about "Partial-Canon". These are ships that have been recognized either IN the show, movie, book, etc. or by actors, directors and writers of the show, movie, book, etc.
Noncanon M/M
Noncanon M/M ships in fanfiction is the relationship making of two men in a movie, tv show, book, etc. But, these ships are not actually "together" fans just want them to be. Some examples of this are;
Draco and Harry - Harry Potter
Mycroft and Lestrade - Sherlock(BBC)
Hikaru and Karu - Ouran High School Host Club
Tony Stark and Steve Rogers - Avengers
Kirk and Spock - Star Trek (REBOOT!!!)

Stony, the ship of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers,
is one of the most beloved M/M ships for Marvel.
Canon
These are M/M ships that are real in their movie, book or TV show. These ships have been recognized as a couple, and are treated as such.
Noncanon
These are femslash ships that are noncanon, in their TV show, movie, book or etc.

Lily and Robin - How I Met Your Mother
Emma and Regina - Once Upon a Time
Rachel and Quinn - Glee
Mulan and Arora - Once Upon a Time
Canon
Some canon femslash ships of characters in either a movie, TV show, book or etc.

Emily and Page - Pretty Little Liars
Willow and Tara - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Adrianna and Gia - 90210
Santana and Brittany - Glee
Herione, the ship of Harry Potter and Hermione
Granger, is noncanon, but lot's of Potterheads that ship this couple won't let their dreams be destroyed.
Now, here are some partial-canon M/M ships;

Dean and Castiel - Supernatural
John and Sherlock - Sherlock(BBC)
Stiles and Derek - Teen Wolf
Merlin and Arthur - Merlin
Neal and Peter - White Collar
Thor and Loki - "Thor", "Thor 2" [Various]
Here are some CANON M/M ships;
Blaine and Kurt - Glee
Ianto Jones and Jack Harkness - Torchwood
Spock and Kirk - The Original Series
Mitchell and Cameron - Modern Family
Ennis and Jack - Brokeback Mt.

Johnlock, the ship of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, is noncanon in the ACD books, but is partially-canon in the BBC series, as the couple has been mistaken at least ONCE in EVERY EPISODE for a romantic-couple. The actor of John Watson, Martin Freeman (AKA Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit) has even commented about it, saying that he TOTALLY agrees with fans and that "...Sherlock and John are some of the most head-over-heels people I have EVER SEEN...".
Blaine and Kurt, from uber-succesful TV show Glee, are a lovable couple with a kind of "on and off relationsip".
Willow and Tara became a couple after a devasted Willow found her boyfriend, Oz cheating on her. Tara helped Willow with her magic and Tara's death was the saddest moment in the entire series.
Robin and Lily are great friends, and have actually kissed, but it was not real, more because Robin was drunk. Lily is married to Marshall and Robin is soon-to-be married to Barney.
