Sea water also contains some soluble salts such as a sodium chloride, magnesium chloride , etc

Extraction of metals
Unwanted rocks, sand and girt from the mineral ore are called gangue or the matrix.

Depending on the type of ore, hydraulic washing , forth floating process, magnetic separation and chemical separation techniques are applied for enrichment an ore.
Naturally occurring materials are combinations of other elements are called minerals
Extracted metals from Mineral ores are classified as Metals and Non metals
Metals
Metals are generally hard and solids at room temperature.

Ex: Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Silver etc

Metalloids
Elements which have both the characteristics of Metals and non-metals are called Metalloids.
Ex: Boron, Aluminium, Silicon etc.

Non-Metals
Metals may be Solids, Liquids or gases at room temperature.

Ex: Helium, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulphur ,Bromine etc.

On the basis of their general physical and chemical properties, every element in the periodic table can be termed either a metal or a non-metal
A few elements with intermediate properties are referred to as metalloids.
Metals occupy the bulk of the periodic table, while non-metallic elements can only be found on the right-hand-side of the Periodic Table
A diagonal line, drawn from boron (B) to polonium (Po), separates the metals from the non-metals.
Most elements on this line are metalloids, sometimes called semiconductors.
This is because these elements exhibit electrical properties intermediate to both, conductors and insulators.
Elements to the lower left of this division - line are called metals, while elements to the upper right of the division - line are called non-metals.

Metals have been an integral part of our life since ancient times.
Iron is the most widely used metal ,it is used for making cooking vessels , water boilers, constructing bridges, houses, ships, etc.
Zinc metal is used for galvanizing iron , in anti corrosion material, in medicinal fields and in alloys.
Aluminium is a light metal used in making aircraft bodies .
Gold and silver are used for making jewellery's.
Lead is used in making water pipes, in pigments, batteries, in alloys etc.


USES OF METALS IN OUR DAILY LIFE

Oxygen is essential for respiration for all living things
Iodine is used to prevent thyroid problems ,and as an antiseptic
Sulphur is used for making fire crackers
Phosphorous is used for match box industry.
Many non-metals are used in manufacturing fertilizers.
Boron, in the form of compound borax, is used in making skin ointments.
Chlorine, in the form of bleaching powder, is used for purification of water.
Bromine is used in the preparation of dyes.
Some compounds of fluorine (such as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride ) are added to toothpastes to prevent dental decays or formation of cavities.
