Research Methods Lecture 22 Conclusion
Transcript of Research Methods Lecture 22 Conclusion
Continue to develop your skills by
Taking more classes that teach methodology
Choosing classes that have research components
Working as undergraduate researchers
On ongoing faculty projects
OR on your own research agenda
How to Approach Faculty
Undergraduate Research Institute keeps an updated list of faculty looking for students to help with research projects
Find faculty you have taken classes from who teach subjects that you are interested in
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Come with a research proposal or topic of interest
Read the faculty member's CV for areas of expertise
Take the Challenge
Faculty have the right to research and teach ideas without fear of punishment, job loss, demotion, or imprisonment regardless of how unpopular, politically incorrect, controversial, or contested
Often VERY Controversial
Hannah Arendt's work on the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem
Pressures during McCarthyism
Virginia Tech's "No, Thanks: Stop Saying 'Support the Troops'"
Your papers are due at 5:00 today
I will begin grading over the weekend and work into the beginning of next week
I will post grades when I am finished and will then submit final grades to the university
PLEASE do not ask!
I will post brief comments on Canvas when I post the grades

Lecture 22: Conclusion
Why It Matters
One of the most important pillars of the Academy
It allows faculty to seek and create knowledge without fear of political reprisal
It empowers faculty to teach the truth as they understand it
It emancipates faculty to follow data wherever that may take them
But without academic freedom, the Academy as we know it would not exist.
It is one of the reasons why brilliantly talented researchers and scholars might prefer the Academy to other private or public sector opportunities.
The most important thing is to do what is challenging
Don't avoid research because it's difficult or you think that you're not good at it
You will learn from your mistakes
It will get easier
You will be light years ahead of other graduates who did not learn to write properly
