by Kayla Mah & Preyanshu Kumar Coal is Alberta's most common energy source Although it helps us produce energy, there are many sever consequences There are many different gases that coal produces, for example, Sulpher Dioxide, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide and Methane. Above is a chart that shows the percentage of Greenhouse gases. open pit mining disturbs the natural landscape of the area as well as harming other environments open pit mining: mining in which fuel, such as coal, is uncovered and dug directly from the ground "Tailings" are the waste material prouduced near the underground mines. When water is used in the mines, the tailings can become acidfied and contaminated. Coal gets burned around the clock, and when they are burned to produce electricity. Many harmful chemicals are released from smokestacks. Precipitators that are used from electrostatics remove all of the solid matter. But they cannot remove certain gases that affect our Earth very severly. The main gas that stay is Sulpher dioxide. This gas creates acid rain and acid rain is horrible for the environment because it destroys plant and animal life. But people have created a system called a scrubber which removes most of the sulpher dioxide by making it react with water. There are differnt forms of renewable resources such as wind, water, solar, and biomass Fossil fuels are used in many different energy sources. Fossil fuels are used very much in the gasoline for our cars and forms of transportation so that our cars can run efficiently. Fossil Fuels as Energy Source Fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas have been used as heat sources for about 5000 years! They are still used in almost every home for heating. Fossil Fuels are also used to generate electricity. Fuel is burned to heat water, this water makes steam that moves turbines which turn generators which produce electricity. wind energy is one of the oldest forms of energy used by humans

Solar electricity is created by Photovaltaic(PV) technology. This takes rays from the Sun and converts it into electricity by use of solar panels. PV technology is powered by two or more thin layers of semi-conducting material. This material is almost always silicon. After the silicon is exposed to light. Small electrical charges are generated, these electrical charges are what powers the PV technology. This in turn, powers solar electricity.

Geothermal Energy Geothermal Energy is heat that is found deep inside of the Earths core. This heat is actually hotter than the Earths energy itself and is taken from the earth and put into hot water and then used to generate electricity. It is also used to heat many different things in our houses for example: water, heating, washers and dryers. There are naturally occuring huge places where this heat is found. So it can be found in abundant areas and it is renewable so it keeps on being made! cons

The making of solar cells is expensive and can harm the environment. Factories have to manufacture these cells and then transport them to other places. This also creates waste. All of these resons can contribute to global warming.
Hydroelectricity is made from falling water and pressure. pros
operation cost is realitivly inexpensive
one of the most used forms of renewable energy
dams help control flooding
dams can be shut down instantly when needed

flooding is needed for these dams to work. This means valleys and areas around the water will be underwater
natural flooding no longer occurs. This would mean silt would not be cleaned out of the rivers and animals who depend on the flooding will have to learn how to adapt or move on (ecosystems will be harmed).

flash flooding can cause a dam to break
areas that are planned to be flooded means that hundreds or thousands of people will have to move

A by product of hydroelectric power is not the energy making itself but the products in order to build the dam. There is the manufacturing and transportation that comes into play Cons:
Only some places actually have certain environments to be able to use geothermal technology
Sometimes it causes earthquakes and they can sometimes be devestating.
Whatever damage that is done can take up to 1000 years to heal and recover
May take a long time to actually get started because people must first come and inspect that land which can take years. Only then can they start the project.
The project itself can be very expensive to produce
Once most or almost all of the steam has been lost it can take some time to rebuild. This can take a very long time

There can be many by-products of geothermal if it is not done correctly. For example, it can produce pollutants if not done properly. Also, if drilled incorrectly it can release harmful gases and minerals into the earth. The three main types of fossil fuels include oil, natural gas and coal Coal Pros

increases many of the greenhouse gases that are emmited in the earth when it is burned
causes many changes in weather for example acid rain and smog
when it is made into fuel, the money that is required is amazingly high
to be transported, it takes many trucks and many miles to travel, this causes more emmisions to be released into the air
the equipment that is required to run these plants is expensive and noisy which distracts wildlife and can lead to their deaths
it actually adds almost 65% more emmisions in the atmosphere
even though it is abundant, coal is a non renewable resource and the coal reserves are dropping drastically each year
because it is mined it causes health problems to many mine workers

The by products that are created by coal are enormous. First it creates many different emmisions in our air such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphuric acids, arsenic and ash. All of these emmisions are very bad for our environment and causes many weather changes and environment changes. Also, carbon creates many pollition problems because of these emmisions. But Carbon does help in creating a lot of different things that we use in our everyday lives. Below is a picture of some of the things that carbon helps us to make.

Natural Gas Pros
it burns more cleanly than all other natural gases, it is considered the "best" one
it produces 70% less gas than all other fossil fuels
does not leave soot or ash like coal
can be non toxic to humans but only if it is inhaled in small amounts
not as expensive as coal
it is a pretty reliable source of energy

it is a very flamable substance and it must be supervised and used with extreme caution
can be a very costly item to produce at times
it is a non renewable resource and will run out soon enough
sometimes when there are leaks it is hard to tell because natural gas has no smell,taste or color

Some of the by-products that are made by natural gas are steel, glass, paper, clothing, brick,paints, fertilizer, plastics, antifreeze, dyes, photographic film, medicines, and explosives. It is also used to heat many homes around the world.

Oil Pros
it is the planets most versatile fossil fuel, it creates many of our different products
easy to store and transport
more clean and much easier to burn than natural gas
the electricity that is produced from oil is alsmost always relible
it takes a really long time to form up in the earth (millions of years) it is also a non renewable resource so we dont have unlimited amounts of it
because they are transported on large ships, they can have many spills in lakes and oceans
creates carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas
because it has sulpher dioxide in it which causes acid rain
not as clean or efficient as natural gas
It can be a very costly to produce oil
A lot of the products that we recieve from oil can be toxic

There are a large amount of by products that come from oil include: plastic and synthetic rubber,petrol, LPG, diesel, fuel oil, lubricants, aviation fuels, asphalt,rubbing alcohol, and medicines (e. g. Aspirin)
Our favorite form of energy/electricity Our favorite form of energy is geothermal powered energy. The reason that we like this type of energy is because it is in vast quantities and has many pros. Some of these pros are that geothermal energy is clean, reliable and safe to use. Although it is hard to produce, when you do find a very good quality location, you can get a lot of steam from it, enough to last many years. The geothermal plants do not need a great amount of space to be made and start to work. So this would be like a really great plan for the far future because if we were to settle on other planets geothermal energy could work because all planets have cores and almost all of out planets cores have lava inside of them so we may be able to use this as a form for energy in the future.
