american privateering activity during the american revolution became and industry born of nessesity that encouraged patriotic private citicens to harass british shipping while risking there own lifes and recorces for finacial gain
basicly the attacked the british for money

european governments regularly issued documents known as letters of marque and rpisal to legitimize privatly outfitted men-of-war.
they sent letters to privateers to tell them who to attack

with the passage of an act on march, 23, 1776,the contenential congress formalized the commissioning process
that is when privateering was leagal in the colonies

nearly 800 vessels were commissioned as privateers and are credited with capturing or destroying about 600 british ships

it is estimated that the total damage to british shipping by american privateers was about $18 million by the end of the war of just over $302 million in today's dollars
in conclusion privateers where people for hire that would harass your enemies during a war or they would harass you in the case of the british. they would attack the fleets of the enemies and would keep the spoils of the ships but at least you didn't have to deal with them!
