General Motors Background Information Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats General Motors was founded in September 16, 1908 by William C. Durant. The company filed chapter 11 bankrupcy in 2009 but is back on is feet currently with the help of the stimulus package. There are many subdivitions of General Motors. Examples of these are Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Gmc. They also provide the OnStar service which provides rapid response in case of emergencies. It has reported 98.7 billion dollars in revenue in 2010 and a net income of 4.2 billion One of the first Auto companies in America. This allows GM to have built up massive amounts of customer bases not only in the United States, but also in other countries. General motors vehicals such as Chevy and Cadillac have become household names Another Strength is their shear size. With a stagering 209,000 employees wolrd wide, makes GM able to do more buissiness in less time. this allows them to maximize their profits. General motors is a leader in fuel efficiancy. The average fuel economy is 31 mpg. this entices buyers because if they buy a fuel efficiant car, then they dont have to spend as much money on gasoline GM has a myriad of weaknesses that might end up bankrupting the corperation for a second time. GM recived billions of dollors from american taxpayers anf has only paid back a fraction of what they owe. Another weakness is that they use low wage forgien workers to build their cars. this can seem as though GM is turning on its original american roots and it is also telling consumers that they would rather be more profitable rather than giving Americans jobs General motors has also closed about 1000 dealerships since 2009 in the U.S. This can be a weaknesses because the dealerships are the only way the company actually can make money. Also since they were in america, american jobs were lost which raised the unemployment rate. With markets growing in both china and india, General motors can seize the opertunity to tap into theses new markets. GM is a major truck producer of the world. If they could take the stradigies they use to sell their trucks so well and aply it to their car sales, they might be able to boost car sales. General Motors produces six hybrid models in the US including the Saturn Vue and Aura Hybrids, Chevrolet Malibu and Tahoe Hybrids, GMC Yukon Hybrid as well as a Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. The company is also investing in hybrid and plug-in vehicles, for both cars and trucks. This can allow them to tap into the big market of eco friendly people wanting eco friendly vehicals. GM has growing compitition throughout the world. similar companies such as Ford pose a threat to GM's sales and to their costumer loyalty. GM has been producing lower and lower profits every year for the past 10 years. this could be their demise because if a company can not profit, it can not stay afloat. During this gobal reccesion, people are wanting to spend less and less money. this is bad for GM because why buy a new car if the old one works perfectally fine. with so many americans tightening their belts, Gm can sell as much cars as they used too. this might bankrupt the company once again THANKS FOR WATCHING!!
