Parts of Rhythm
Definition
Activities:

1) Keep a steady beat
2) Create a rhythm tree
3) Clap simple rhythms
4) In groups of 2-3, choose a popular song (something the class will know) and clap a short section of the rhythm. Your goal is to get the class to recognize the song using rhythm alone!
Example:
Have you ever noticed that when you tap your foot to the music, that the beats are grouped together? This is called Meter.
Meter:
How beats are grouped together.
Measure: A section of music that
contains a specific number of beats.
Bar Line: A line that divides the staff into
measures.
Time Signature: The time signature tells a
musician what meter a song is in. The
most popular time signatures are:

2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8.
The top number (first number) always tells how many beats are in a measure.

The bottom number (the second number) always tells what note gets the beat.

If there is a 4 on bottom the quarter note gets the beat.

If there is an 8 on botton the eighth note gets the beat.
Examples
Tempo
Dynamics
Tempo is the speed of the music.
It is how fast or slow the music is.
There are 4 Main Tempos:
Presto-
Very Fast
Allegro-
fast and brisk
Moderato-
Medium
Largo-Very Slow
crescendo=gradually get louder

decrescendo=gradually get softer
the volume of music
Other Tempos:
Adagio = Slow
Andante = Walking Tempo
Vivace = Very Fast
Accelerando:
To gradually speed up!
Ritardando:
To gradually slow down!
Steady Beat
A steady beat is an even pulse within music.

Steady beats happen naturally in and out of music.

Examples: Heart Beat, Mechanical work (hammering, robotic manufacturing), a horse running, the wings of a hummingbird, etc.
