Properties of minerals
Transcript of Properties of minerals
What is a mineral?
The crystals of each mineral grow atom by atom to form that mineral's crystals structure. Sometimes, the crystals is obvious from the mineral's appearance.
It is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a define chemical composition.
COLOR: Some minerals are colored Gold, Pyrite and Chalcopyrite.
It is easily observed physical property. It is even used to identify minerals that have its own characteristic color.
If you want to observe a streak you can rub a mineral against an unglazed porcelain tile.
Luster is a term used to describe how light is reflected from a mineral's surface.
If you want to describe the luster of a rock it might be Earthy,Waxy and Pearly for example.
Each mineral has a characteristic density. You can pick them up and heft them, or fell their weight, in your hands.
When geologist measure density, they use a balance to determine the precise mass of a mineral sample.
If you want to identify, the best clue is to use the minerals hardness. Like in the pictures on is Talc and the other is Dimond. Friedrich an Austian expert, invented a test to describe the hardnes of a minerals that was called Mohs hardness scale.
Minerals can be identify special physical properties
Cleavage And Fracture
is a minerals that splits easily along flat surface
describes how a mineral look when it breaks apart in an irregular way
( As shown in the picture ) It is a Magnetism rock it is coming from the word magnet. It could attracts clips, iron staples,........

DID YOU REMEMBER ANYTHING
1. WHAT ARE THE 3 COLORS MINERALS HAVE IN COMMON?
CLEAVAGE a mineral that splits easily among flat surface
FRACTURE decribes how a mineral looks when it break in an irregular way
it attracts iron staples , paper clips,......
DIMOND IS HARDEST KNOWN
2. WHICH IS HARD TALC OR DIMOND?
3. WHAT IS A CLEAVAGE AND A FRACTURE ?
4.WHAT CAN A MAGNETISM DO?
5. CAN YOU DESCRIBE MINERALS IN YOUR OUN WORDS?
To be classified as a mineral, a substance must be formed by processes in the natural world.
There are 5 properties of Minerals
A mineral must be inorganic, not a part of a living thing. Coal is not a minerals because it was once a part of a living thing which is a plant that lived millions of years ago.
Minerals are always solid with define volume and shape. The parts in fixed positions (packed up together tightly).
The particles of a mineral line up in a pattern that repeats over and over again. The repeating pattern of a mineral's particles form a solid called a crystal. (a crystals has flat sides that meet at sharp edges and corners).
DEFINITE CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS
A minerals has a definite chemical composition or range of compositions. this means that a mineral always contains certain elements in definite proportions.
What is Streak?
Its is the color of the mineral's powder.
Density = Mass / Volume
