To enable the production of gender-responsive and gender-transformative knowledge and innovations
Yet their participation in tree domestication is often hindered by gender inequalities often inter-twined with clan, ethnic and other modes of social differentiation
Gender differences determine motivations to incorporate trees on farms. In Africa, male motivation is largely conditioned by financial factors, females are concerned with soil conservation and household food consumption
Decision-making over land use is gendered, as are perceptions about environmental and ecosystem services. Both aspects have strong implications for understanding landscape multi-functionality
Women are traditionally key actors in tree based production systems, including as main collectors of fuel wood, medicinal plants and other NTFPs.
They are primary domesticators of forest-based food and medicinal plants
To achieve significant impacts in development challenges
To avoid unintended consequences of research that can lead to greater inequality
To rigorously address gender equality and women’s empowerment issues in agriculture and natural resource management

Strategy should focus on gender transformative research
No strong consensus on embracing gender transformative approaches

Integrating gender in ICRAF’s research and development
Role 2: Building robust evidence for higher-level decisions on policies and investments
Evidence should account for gender and social factors of differentiation and their intersection with cultural, historical and environmental context.
Including research on gender strategic issues: analyzing institutions, power relations, structural barriers
Ensure adequate gender and social stratification in field research, identification of potential gender concerns and addresing these in research design
Role 1: Generation and validation of knowledge as International Public Goods (IPGs)
Focus on gender differences in technology adaptation;
Apply a gender lens to the assessment of options and interests considered;
Iterative learning approaches with partners aiming at gender transformation
Role 3: Working with partners at multiple scales to translate IPGs into actionable knowledge
Design scalable options that simultaneously increase productivity, sustainability and gender equality
Engage with relevant stakeholders with an interest in, and responsibility for gender equity policies and programming;
Roles 4: Demonstrating proof of application of knowledge to accelerate impact and advance the science of scaling up
Promote the adoption of national and international agroforestry, agriculture and/or NRM policies that include specific and appropriate provisions that dismantle structural barriers to rural women’s empowerment and gender equality
Role 6: Convening, advocacy and interfacing amongst a wide range of partners to be co-responsible for development outcomes
Promote gender-sensitive agroforestry innovations (social and technological) that are proven and tested at regional, community, household
Mobilize efforts to improve gender awareness and capacity of agroforestry boundary partner institutions.
