Pablo Picasso
Even though he did not do well in school his time in Madrid was not wasted. Pablo went to visit Madrid's many museums and saw the paintings of Diego Velasquez and Francisco Goya. He admired the works of a painter named El Greco the most.
It is another example of Cubism. Can you find the players of the clarinet, the guitar, or the accordion?
There are 16,840 works of art cataloged and attributed to Picasso. This includes paintings, drawings, and sculpture.
This is Picasso's first painting completed at age 9.
At the age of 16, Pablo's father enrolled him in Spain's most distinguished art school, Madrid's Royal Academy of San Fernando.
One of the worlds most famous
and

prolific artists!

This is what Magala Spainlooks like today.
At an early age Pablo showed an interest in drawing. His first words were "piz, piz", which is short for "lapiz", the Spanish word for pencil.
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up" Pablo Picasso
When Picasso was 7 he began to receive art lessons from his father, who was an art teacher.
In Paris he met a sculptor Georges Barque and together they created a new style of art called "Cubism".
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga Spain, in 1881.

Four years later, in 1895, the family moved again, this time east to Barcelona, with both father and son transfering to the Llotja School of Fine Arts as teacher and student respectively
In Cubism objects were taken apart and put back together in different ways, like these portraits.
Picasso was baptized Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picass, that's 23 words and names, if your counting!
Le Picador
It is his first "academic" painting and it shows his father, mother and sister kneeling before an alter.
This painting was completed 6 years later, when Picasso was 15 years old.
This painting is called "Three Musicians".
Picasso lived to be an old man ( 91 Years old) and he created many pieces of art!
"For being a bad student I was banished to the 'calaboose' - a bare cell with whitewashed walls and a bench to sit on. I liked it there, because I took along a sketch pad and drew incessantly ... I could have stayed there forever drawing without stopping" (Source)

Pablo started by imitating the masters of the time but soon decided he needed his own style.
The rose period came next. It lasted from 1905-1907.
His art went through many changes, which are called periods.

Pablo had gone to Paris in 1900 and shortly after his
BLUE PERIOD
began.
Can you guess why they called it the rose period?
From 1908 to 1909 Picasso was influenced by African art, especially African masks.
