Transcript of Types of Porn

A few types of pornography.
Gonzo Pornography
: mostly amateur porn, attempts to place the viewer into the scene, very little plot or dialogue - just sex, always classified as "hardcore," similar to Point of View pornography.

Feature
: Mimic conventions of a Hollywood movie. Character development, and dialogue. All leading to the sex.

Softcore
: still or cinematic photography that has a pornographic or erotic component, but less sexually graphic. Late night HBO and Showtime shows. Many people argue that much of today's advertising is equatable to softcore porn. No visible penetration.

Hardcore
: still or cinematic photography that contains explicit forms of pornography. Includes vaginal, anal, and/or oral intercourse.
Sub genres of pornography.
Physical characteristics
: age, hair, body features, race and ethnicity, subculture.

Sexual Preference/Gender
: men with women, men with men, women with women, multiple men and women together, trans, trans men/women with cis women/men, etc.

Other

Robert Jensen's Definition of Porn:
Pornography is the material sold in pornography shops and on pornography website, for the purpose of producing sexual arousal for the mostly male consumer.

The graphic sexually explicit material sold for the purpose of arousing and satisfying sexual desire.
Andrea Dworkin on Porn.
"In the subordination of women, inequality itself is sexualized: made into the experience of sexual pleasure, essential to sexual desire. Pornography is the material means of sexualizing inequality; and that is why pornography is a central practice in the subordination of women." (Jensen pg 53)

Andrea Dworkin was an American radical feminist and writer, best known for her crisicism of pornography which she argued was linked to rape and other forms of violence against women. She was a spokeswoman for the feminist anti-pornography movement and considered the pornography industry to be based on turning women into objects for abuse by men. Her and MacKinnon developed legislative to outlaw pornography based in civil rights rather than obscenity.
Many of these elements are seen throughout most of the mainstream porn industry.

Objectification:
when "a human being, through social menas, is made less than human, turned into a thing or commodity, bought and sold."

Hierarchy:
a question of power, with "a group on top (men) and a group on the bottom (women).

Submission:
when acts of obedience and compliance become necessary for survival, members of oppressed groups learn to anticipate the orders and desires of those who have power over them and their compliance is then used by the dominant group to justify its dominance.

Violence:
when it becomes "systematic, endemic enough to be unremarkable and normatie usually taken as an implicit right of the one committing the violence."
Jensen's findings revealed:
all women at all times want sex from all men.

women like all the sexual acts that men perform or demand; and

any woman who does not at first realize this can be easily turned with a little force. Such force is rarely necessary, however, for most of the women in pornography are the "nymphomaniacs" that men fantasize about.
Man fucks woman; subject verb object.
Teen, young, whore, etc.
Men have agency and act. Women are acted upon.

Different status of men and women:

Men have penises, but during sex they are not referred to as penises. Women not only have a vagina, but can be reduced to their vagina––a woman is a "cunt."

It's not just part of her body, something she has––it is what she IS. ("I'm a cunt - or bitch, whore, slut - fuck me with your big cock.")

She is nothing more than her sexual organ.
Man fucks woman; subject verb object.
While most of the mainstream porn today is arguably degrading, objectifying, and perpetuating harmful ideas about sex, Many people do not believe this makes porn inherently wrong.

Many anti-pornography feminists believe that porn is an apparatus of the patriarchy that reduces women to sex objects and is a part of the systematic oppression and degradation of women.

This claim robs the performers of control over their bodies and shames them for participating in an industry that provides them with financial stability and the opportunity to explore their sexuality.
Problems within the porn industry stem from larger patriarchal framework.

While the industry may require drastic improvement, pornography cannot be blamed for sexism and violence that come from institutionalized policies that repeatedly shame and debase female sexuality.

Many feminist argue that in order to reform the porn industry we must first work to destigmatize it.
Using porn to advertise to young girls.
Advertising uses the same pornographic images to sell sexual desire to masturbating men, as they do to sell a variety of items to women and girls.
