Marijuana
Prevention

What is it?
Marijuana is a dry, shredded green and brown mix of leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant Cannabis Sativa.
Because THC is stored in the fat cells... it takes about 1 month
(30 days) for the body to get rid of all the THC.
Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC) is the mind-altering chemical in Marijuana.
The level of THC in the marijuana is used as the measure of how strong it is
Is everyone using it?
Effects Of Use
Effects on the Brain
People who began smoking marijuana heavily in their teens lost as much as 8 points in IQ between age 13 and age 38.
Regular marijuana use by young people can have long-lasting negative impacts on the structure and function of their brains.
The lost cognitive (brain) abilities were not restored in those who quit smoking marijuana as adults.
Effects on the Heart & Lungs
Marijuana raises the heart rate by 20-100% shortly after smoking; this effect can last up to 3 hours.
Effects on Lungs
* daily cough
* increase phlegm production
* frequent chest illness
* increased risk of lung infections
*research is still not sure if Marijuana is the sole cause, as most Marijuana smokers also smoke tobacco.
Effects on Driving
Driving under the influence of Marijuana can impair:
* judgement
* motor coordination
* reaction time

Studies show that driving while under the influence of Marijuana more than doubles the chances of being in a car accident.
Addiction
9% of users become
addicted to marijuana
Long-term users also experience the following withdrawal symptoms:

* irritability
* sleeplessness
* decreased appetite
* anxiety
* drug craving
Marijuana use impairs:
* perceptions
* coordination
* concentration
* learning & memory
* problem solving

17% among those who start
using at a young age will
become addicted - that's 1 in 6 teens
Associations have been found between Marijuana use and other mental health problems including...
Suicidal thoughts
personality disorders
"amotivational syndrome"
+ High doses can produce a temporary psychotic reaction (involving hallucinations and paranoia)

+ Marijuana can worsen the course of illness in patients with schizophrenia.

Psychosis= a severe mental disorder in which there is a loss of contact with reality, including false ideas about what is happening (delusions) and seeing or hearing things that aren’t there (hallucinations)
In addition...
Effects on daily life for heavy users
Less academic &
career success
Lower life satisfaction
Relationship problems
Several studies also associate workers' marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers' compensation claims, and job turnover.
There are much safer ways to get a natural high...
Statistics
Only 6.2
%
of Maryland middle school students have used Marjuana in the past 30 days...
That means
93.8
%
