Bronx, New York Calvin Richard Klein Calvin is the second of three kids of Flo and Leo Stern Calvin's grandmother was a seamstress who inspired him for his love for sewing. Calvin's mother encouraged him for his love for art and fashion. Instead of playing sports Calvin would sew & study sketches of designs He went to the Fashion Institute of technology graduated in 1962. Spend 5 years as an apprentice in a coat and suit house on seventh street in NYC. Worked long nights & weekends perfecting his own designs 1968- Calvin and his childhood friend Barry Schwartz created a Calvin Klein coat business. The first coat order was an accident A buyer from Bonwit Teller had gotten off on the wrong floor and had gone into Klein's work room. She had wrote an order for $50,000. Basic Info He was encouraged by favorable reviews and the fashion press as well as the support of store executives. Expanded his line to women's sportswear. He went to High School of Art and Design
prepared him for a career in drafting and advertising. By 1997 Calvin Klein jeans sales made half a billion dollars He was the first to design women's underwear that had looked like mens jockey shorts. His television ads for jeans had starred Brooke Shields "Nothing comes between me and my Klein's" mid 1990's his ads featuring young teens in provocative poses People "regraded the ads as socially irresponsible"

Due to sexually suggestive ads some of his ads shown teens taking part in a drug culture Bill Clinton didn't want the fashion industry to not glamorize addiction Klein had said that the ads represented a fake airbrush photos that weren't connected to reality He received a critical acclaim for his clean, modern lines Time magazine named him one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1996 won the Coty award 3 times in a row 1973-1975 his design philosophy is "simple" neutral colors or earth tones Became the youngest designer to ever have that honor
1982, 1983, 1986- received the Council of Fashion Designers of American Award
Built a financially strong company and he still got help from his friend Barry Schwartz- guided the company through rough in the late 1980's He married Jayne Centre in 1964 but divorced in 1974
