What do you think about our governments veiw on stem cells?
Do you think it should be okay to use left over embryos (killing a potential life) ok to help keep someone else alive?
Umbilical Cord Stem Cell
Adult Stem Cells
Embryonic Stem Cells
Catholic Church
The preparation of embryonic stem cells from a

living embryo requires the destruction of the

embryo, which the Church teaches is a gravely

immoral act.
Some scientists have used cloning to produce

embryos in order to harvest stem cells. While these

embryos are not created in the normal manner, the

Church recognizes that they, too, are alive, and

their destruction is gravely immoral.
Church's View on Embryonic Stem Cells
The Church opposes the use of embryonic stem-

cell lines that already exist for the same reason that

they oppose the creation of new lines: Those lines

began with the destruction of innocent human life.
Non-Embryonic Stem-Cells
Catholic Churches view on:
The Catholic Church has no controversy about research

involving all non-embrionic types of stem cells. In fact, the

Catholic Church has publicly supported adult and umbilical-

cord stem-cell research, and Church leaders were among the

first to applaud the discovery of amniotic stem cells and to call

for further research.
Judaism Believes
Islamic Views
First, there is difference between potential life and actual life.
They believe that the embryo is potential life and has can be taken.
There is nothing wrong in doing this research, especially if this research has a potential to cure diseases and help people who are sick
Believes that stem cells must be donated not a doctor paying a woman for her stem cells.
Adult Stem cells can help out with spinal cord injuries,

blindness, juvenile diabetes, Parkinson's disease,

Lou Gehrig's disease, Alzheimer's disease , HIV,

and is harmless to the to embryos
Adult Stem cells are a perfect match to the patient because it has the same DNA as the pacient.
Embryonic Stem Cells can change into 220 types of blood cells, skin cells, and nerve cells.
Umbilical cord stem cells are simple, safe and
painless, younger, available immediately
used to treat nearly 80 serious diseases,
including leukemia, some cancers, and blood
Do Clones have a soul?
Would you be able to tell the difference between the real one and the clone?
A Illistration of Adult Stem Cells
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Adult stem cells can be painful
to obtain from patient from bone
marrow, and harder to obtain.
Acquiring the Adult stem cells is a
very long process and takes a lot of time
Embryonic Stem Cells are said to be immoral, because you have to kill an embryo which is a live human being
ASC (Adult Stem Cells) can renew themselves, and can differentiate to yield the major specialized cell types of the tissue or organ.
Embryonic Stem Cells are not always the perfect
match to the pacient.
Embryonic Stem Cells requires a lifelong use
of drugs to prevent rejection of the tissue.
ASC (Adult Stem Cells)
are less versatile, generally limited to differentiating into different cell types of their tissue of origin.
Embryonic Stem Cells that use long-term storage can create chromosomal abnormalities that can lead to the creation of cancer cells.
Umbilical Cord Stem Cells requires
a high price for storage
Umbilical Cord Stem Cells do not have a huge chance that they will will ever be used by the patient.
There is a limited amount of umbilical cord blood in the umbilical cord
Embryonic Stem Cells have not had a
single sucessful therapeutic use so far.
20 more years of research with adult stem cell than embryonic stem cells
There have been 20 more years of research with adult stem cell than embryonic stem cells
Embryonic Stem Cells can change into 220 types of blood cells, skin cells, and nerve cells.
Umbilical cord stem cells are simple, safe and
painless, younger, available immediately
used to treat nearly 80 serious diseases,
including leukemia, some cancers, and blood
Umbilical Cord Stem Cells lasts long when they are stored properly
Jews allow medical intervention to correct both congenital and acquired defects, and makes no distinction between stem and somatic (body) cell tissues. but at same time don't believe in improving on God’s creation
In traditional Hinduism Hindu belief,
conception is beginning of the soul is re-birthed from a previous life.
Some Buddhists argue that stem cell research is in accordance with the Buddhist tenet of seeking knowledge and ending human suffering.
Other Buddhists argue that it is a violation of the notion of not harming others.
Lisa Beelle had a previous stem cell treatment which did a bone marrow transplant to battle aggressive non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Now after Chemo here heart is slowly failing for the past 15 years. Her future currently has a heart transplant in it, but she believes it would be so much better if her heart were made of her own cells. She still feels the need to fight.
The body's "master cells"
the building blocks of organ tissue, blood, and the immune system.
Embryonic stem cells
An embryo that has developed for three to five days is called a blastocyst.
The embroys are from feritlized eggs
grown in the blastocyst
it has a mass of 100 cells or more
Induced pluripotent stem cell
ability for stem cells to turn into over 200 cells
when taken and changed can be put into any part of body
Do you think it is this morally right to harvest embryos to potentally help others?
They are found in the bone marrow
of the bone.
Their primary role is to repair and maintain
the tissue in where it is placed.
Obtained by 3 hour long surgery where a needle extractes the cells from the bone marrow
So the Question?
Are adult stem cells worth the challenge over embryonic stem cells?
Why store this if it may never be used?
How do all of these weigh out?
The uses of all stem cells
Umbilical cord stem cells
Umbilical cord blood and matchs with newborn
They are obtained
After birth of newborn, the umbilical cord is cut
the blood is extracted which contains stem cells
Then stored. Store cost $1200 The first year then $90 every year after.
Are stored and used for if the child needs them in the future for diseases
What would you do if you were disabled and what options would you look at and why?
Adult Stem Cells
They are used to test new medications

They are used in cell-based therapy
Dolly the sheep?
