Gamerman, N Isolation/Hunting Hat p7
Transcript of Gamerman, N Isolation/Hunting Hat p7
"That's a deer shooting hat"
"Like hell it is" I took i off and looked at it. I sort of closed one eye, like I was taking aim at it. "This is a people shooting people hat," I said. "I shoot people in this hat" (22)
Holden wearing the hat in his room shows his intent to be isolated and ostracized, especially since he is self conscious of the hat. Holden only wears the hat when he is alone thus reflecting isolation.
"We got to the Edmont Hotel, and I checked in. I'd put on my red hunting cap when i was in the cab, just for the hell of it, but i took it off before i checked in. I didn't want to look like a screwball or something. Which is really ironic. I didn't know then that the goddam hotel was full of perverts and morons. Screwballs all over the place."
Here Holden removes his hunting hat to isolate himself from others in order to protect himself from their opinions. He says he doesn't want to be thought of as a "screwball" and by removing the hat he makes himself inconspicuous to not draw attention thus isolating himself.
The Hunting Hat and Isolation
Holden's red hunting hat is a symbol that is present through out the book that reflects his desire to be isolated from others due to his insecurities and need for isolation
"Anyway finally I had to come right out sand tell him that I had to write a composition for Stradlater and that he had to clear out so I could concentrate. He finally did, but he took his time about it, as usual, After he left, i put on my pajamas and bath robe and my old hunting hat, and started writing the composition." (37)
Here Holden shoos away Ackley in order to isolate himself before putting on the hat and writing Stradlater's composition. Also Holden writes about his deceased brother finding comfort and isolation in the past.
The Catcher In the Rye
In the Catcher In The Rye Holden's hunting cap represents his desire to isolate himself so that he may protect himself from the opinions of others. Also the conspicuous nature of the hate symbolizes Holden's desire for uniqueness. Near the end of the book when Holden gives the hat to Phoebe it symbolizes his moving on and maturation.
"Anyway, I put on my new hat and sat down and started reading the book
Out of Africa
Here Holden prepares for isolation by putting on his red hunting cap. Holden expects to be isolated and thus puts his cap on. When Ackley comes in Holden becomes immediately self conscious of his hat, the symbol of his isolation.
