Transcript of Copy of The Early Roman Republic

The Early Roman Republic
In 509 BC, the Romans decided to make their government a
republic
Republic = a type of government where
people elect leaders to govern them; no one person has too much power
Words Worth Knowing!
Each year, the Romans
elected
officials
to rule the city,
but only for one year!
Why do you think the Romans only allowed
their elected officials to rule for one year?
Turn to a partner and
discuss
the following question on the worksheet:
The elected officials were mostly
wealthy
and
powerful
men, and they held almost complete power over Rome
However, all was not well in Rome.
During the first 50 years of the
Republic, the Romans were
involved in constant
warfare
.
Many
lives
and
properties
were
destroyed.....
During these difficult times, Romans chose
dictators
- rulers with almost absolute power - to lead the city....

Cincinnatus,
famous Roman dictator

Why do you think the Romans chose a
dictator to rule while they were at war?
Turn to a partner and
discuss
the following question
on your worksheet:

Patrician = Roman nobles that held all
politcal power

Plebeian = common people that held
no political power

Words Worth Knowing!!

Plebeians

Once completely
controlled government
Eventually banished
