Think about how you solve whole number multiplication problems.

60x2 can be:

60+60 or

you can perform the standard algorithm 60x2.
How does this strategy apply to multiplying fractions with whole numbers?

I forgot how far I ran today but I know the following:

I ran two times less than Sophie.
Sophie ran 5 times more than Jake.
Jake ran two times more than Corina.
Corina ran 2/3 of a mile.

Practice together:

2/7 x 3
4/5 x 2

Practice Alone:

2/3 x 7
7/8 x 2

*Challenge: 7 x 4/2
9 x 11/15
Solve numbers 1 OR 2 on a post it and answer number 3:

1. 1/9 x 7
2. 4/5 x 4
3. What strategy did you use?

4. Challenge: 2/3 x 4/2
*Write the answer in simplest form.
1: Don't understand
2. I need support
3. I fully understand

On Friday night, John ate pizza for dinner and had 1/2 of the pizza left over. On Saturday, he ate 1/3 of what was left. How much of the whole pizza did John eat on Saturday? Prove your answer is correct by drawing a picture.
The lunchroom at Mandy’s school serves pizza every Friday. Each slice is 2/16 of a pizza. Mandy eats one slice every week. What fraction of a pizza does Mandy eat in 3 weeks? 7 weeks? Prove that your answer is correct by drawing a picture to represent the problem. Then represent the problem using addition and multiplication.
Practice solving the following problem with a friend.
Try this challenging problem with a friend. Then we will talk about the strategies we used to solve it.
