Saint Juan Diego Juan Diego was born in 1474. He had three jobs. A weaver, a farmer, and a laborer. Juan Diego's Prayer The Holy Father called Juan Diego ''A Simple, Humble Indian" Interesting Facts Juan Diego was canonized on July 31, in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Facts Juan Diego walked 15 miles to get to mass everyday. Juan Diego's Story One day when Juan Diego was walking to church he saw Mary on the top of a hill. Mary asked Juan Diego to build a church on the top of the hill. Juan Diego tried to tell the bishop what he saw and he didn't believe him and asked him to bring proof that he saw Mary. So Juan Diego went to go get proof that Mary was there but on his way he found out his uncle was dying. He went to get a priest and missed meeting with Mary. However, Mary meet him on this way and told him his uncle was cured. Then, Mary told Juan Diego to climb the top of the hill where they first meet. There, Juan Diego was shocked to see Castilian Flowers growing in the frozen soil. This was odd because the soil was frozen and Castilian Flowers don't grow in Mexico. So, Juan Diego gathered up the flowers and put them in his cloak. Then when Juan Diego went to show the bishop the flowers, he open his cloak and where the flowers were laying was a picture of Mary. The bishop then believed him and let them bulid the church on the top of the hill.
