How a Plant Cell Is Like a Zoo By: Sahana Harikrishnan Cell Wall: The gates around the zoo are like the cell wall of a cell because they a re a stiff, rigid structure that protect the cell. Cell Membrane: The entrance of the zoo is like a cell membrane, as it is selectively permeable. It only let's visitors enter the zoo at certain times, while restricting them at others. Nucleus: The head office of the zoo is like the nucleus of a cell. It directs all operations concerning the zoo, including how it works and what happens within it. Mitochondrion: The mitochondrion are attractions within the zoo that collect tickets or passes in exchange for entrance to exhibits, stores, and animal rides. Like the catabolic mitochondrion, these attractions break down the value of tickets for various forms of amusement. Chloroplasts: The zoo's ticket purchasing booth is like a cell's chloroplast. Money, in the forms of dollars, coins, and checks, are taken in exchange for a ticket to the zoo and for attractions within the zoo. Money and tickets are also stored here, waiting to to be given away or used for other purposes. The money is like energy, the substance that allows the zoo to run itself. Vacuole: The cages that contain the animals and the buildings that store the food for the animals are like a cell's vacuole. Both the vacuole and these cages occupy more than 50% of the area of their locations. Endoplasmic Reticulum: The pathways that wind through a zoo, connecting various areas, are like the tubes and channels that connect organelles in a cell Ribosomes: Dotting the pathways of the zoo, there are smaller attractions, like rides, food booths, and souvenir shops generate food and amusement for the zoo's visitors. Buildings where food is prepared for the animals are also here. These smaller areas within the zoo are like the ribosomes of the cell, preparing food and collecting and using the money stored by other organelles. Golgi Body: The zookeepers of a zoo are like the golgi body of a cell. They package the waste and food of the zoo's animals, and make sure everything is delivered to the correct area. If anything needs to be moved between two areas, they are in charge of performing this act. Vesicles: The visitors and their vehicles are like the vesicles of a cell. They move in and out, bringing money and leaving with purchases of some sort. They buy tickets, eat food, and purchase souvenirs, all of which they take outside the zoo with them. THE END
