August 2nd, 1964

Gulf of Tonkin Incident
August 2nd, 1964 to August 4th,1964
North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked an American destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin
another American destroyer was sent in
the two reported they were under attack on the 4th
retalitory air attacks were authorized on North Vietnam
Operation Rolling Thunder
from March 2nd, 1965 to November 2nd, 1968
a gradual and sustained aerial bombardment campaign
included the US 2nd Air Division, the US Navy, and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force
it was all aimed against North Vietnam
Tet Offensive
launched on January 30th, 1968
one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam War
it was launched by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese People's Army of Vietnam
the name comes from the Tet Holiday or Vietnamese New Year, which is when the first major attacks took place
Mai Lai Massacre
March 16th, 1968
the mass killing of between 347 and 504 unarmed South Vietnamese Civilians
committed by US soldiers
only the platoon leader, Lt. William Calley Jr. was convicted of killing 22 villagers
Operation Ranch Hand
lasting from 1962 to1971
was a US military operation
they used Agent Orange
sprayed nearly 20,000,000 US gallons of chemicals
at least 6,542 spraying missions took place
they used Agent Blue too

Agent Blue is...
obtained by the oxidation of cacodyl
it destroyed 500,000 acres of farmland in Vietnam

everyone thought it was going to be a success but it was a failure
