Energy in the Atmosphere 3 types of radiaton Ultraviolet Radiation
Infrared Radiation
Visible Light The radiatons are all directly transfored from electromagenetic
waves. Ultraviolet and Infrared are both invisable. Visible light you can see and is the mixture of
all the colors youcan see in the rainbow. The Sun's energy can be absorbed by the Earth's surface. The energy is turned into heat. When Earth's surface is heated, it lets back some
of the energy to the atmosphere as infrared radiation. The energy can't go back to space because it is trapped by the atmoshere. Most of it is absorbed by water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane
and other gases. The energy heats the gases. These gases form a layer that holds heat in the atmosphere. This is called the greenhouse effect. Nearly all of the energy on the earth comes from the sun. This energy travels to the earth as electromagnetic waves. The direct transfer of the energy by electromagnetic waves is called radiation. Scattering is reflection of light in all directions. In the sky, the light has been scatted by gas molecules in the atmosphere. Gas waves scatter blue and purple more often than red and orange. The scattered light is also bluer than normal sunlight making the sky blue. When the sun is rising or settin, the light from the sun passes throught
the thickest part of the atmosphere. More blue scattering light is removed by scattering before it reaches your eyes. That is why the sun lookes red in a sunset. Emily Oliver and Taddie Cook
