What is a "rocket"?
A rocket is missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle that obtains thrust from a engine. It can achieve great heights and/or distance by the combustion by its fuel. Its distinct shape is cylindrical tower with a coned top.
History of Rockets
- In around 400bc a scientist named Archytas used escaping steam to propel a model
pigeon along some wires to perform the first ever rocket.

- During the 1st century China was the second country in the world to launch a rocket, they set off fire works more than a thousand years ago. Gunpowder was their source on being able to launch the fireworks.

- Konstantin Tsiolkovskii suggested liquid fuel be used for rockets which consisted of mostly
a combination of Liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

- It took as long as the mid 1900's for humans to began building rockets that launched to outter space.

- A space rocket needs heeps of power to lift off and escape earths gravity.

- Humans have granted power to the rockets by burning tons of liquid fuel which is often a use of a combination between oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

- The first rocket that was put in space was Sputnik 1 (Oct. 4, 1957) from Russia and shortly after the Russians also achieved the first living thing to be in space was a dog named Laika which survived for 7 days around earths orbit. (Nov, 1957)

- Shortly after in 1961 Explorer 1 (USA) and Alouette in1962 (Canada) were launched into space. And who doesn't know about the first man on the moon? On July 16, 1969 Apollo 11 was launched with Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins and they achieved the first man to ever step on the moon!
How do Rockets Work?
A space rocket needs a lot of force and power to lift off and to escape Earth's gravity. The power comes from huge engines that burn tons of liquid fuel. Usually a combination liquid Hydrogen and Oxygen. As the gases push out the bottom the ship rises because of Newton's Third Law of Motion (For every action there is an equal or reaction opposite reaction.)
Why do we have Rockets? & What do we use them for ?
Rockets are cool!
For the past century, rockets have been used in military tactics, sending brave astronauts to the moon, getting satelites in orbit and even sending probes to distant planets. But why do we humans care what is out in space ? The answer is our curiosity. The thought of something unknown or new to us gives thrill and motivation. We use rockets to discover new things about Earth and our solar system.

As technology evolves at a rapid pace, NASA is working on powerful rockets that can lift heavy loads such as vehicles and machinery. These types of rockets can bring supplies to the ISS and maybe even carry loads that will help us discover more about space.
FUN FACTS
- For the rockets that moves people into space, it costs $250,000 for 1 pound that makes it to space. (How's that for a moving bill?)

-A rat named Hector "piloted" France's rocket in 1961

-Saturn 5 is the largest rocket ever built. It had five rocket engines and was taller than a 30-story building. It took the first men to the moon.

-Robert Goddard (First Liquid Rocket launch): Robert's widow got paid 1 million dollars because NASA violated his patents in their own rockets designs.
