Set of rules which seeks, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflicts.
Law of War/Law of Armed Conflict.
Part of International Law.
What is International Humanitarian Law ? Where Did IHL Originate? Fault is not in the law, but it’s in the observance
Rooted in the rules of ancient civilizations and religious-warfare has always been subject to certain principal and customs.
Universal codification of IHL began in the 19th century.
Universal body of law.
The 1972 Biological Weapons Convention.
The 1980 Conventional Weapons Convention & its five Protocols.
The 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention.
The 1997 Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel mines etc.
Other Agreements Applies only to armed conflict
It does not cover internal tensions or disturbances
Applies only once a conflict has begun
Equally to all sides regardless of who started the fighting
When does IHL Apply? Since this body of law applies during times of extreme violence, implementing the law will always be a matter of great difficulty.
However ,there are important cases where IHL has made a difference
Is IHL actually complied with? Where is IHL to be Found? Four Geneva Conventions of 1949.
Two Additional Protocols of 1977.
Other Agreements. What does IHL Cover The protection of those who are not, or no longer, taking part in fighting
Restriction on the means of warfare
What should be done to implement the law? Ensure respect for IHL
States have an obligation to teach its rules to their armed forces & general public
Enact laws
