Gamma Ray Burst Gamma Ray Bursts are believed to be a narrow beam of intense radiation released during a supernova event,or a high mass star collapes to form a blackhole. On July 2,1967 at 14:19 Vela 3 and 4 satellites spotted the first GRB. It was believed to be a nuclear weapons test by the USSR. GRB can be observed by X-Ray,Ultraviolet,Optical,Infrared and Radio. If a GRB was aimed at the earth it would destroy the Ozone layer and cause MASS EXTINCTION on the earth!!!!!!!!! The closest GRB to earth ever recorded was 100 million light years away. For a galaxy the same size as the Milky Way, the expected rate of gamma ray bursts is about one burst every 100,000 to 1,000,000 years. Only a few percent of these would be beamed towards Earth. In 2 seconds a GRB will release as much energy as the Sun will produce in its 10 billion year life time! A GRB is considered to be the largest explosion in the universe
