Science Fiction Elements In:
"The Knife Of Never Letting" Go by Patrick Ness
What is science fiction?
By Gabby Popovski
A knife is only as good as the one who wields it
even if it’s an inevitable conclusion, it doesn’t mean that you can’t take the first strike and choose the arena of battle.
"But a knife ain’t just a thing, is it? It’s a choice, it’s something you do. A knife says yes or not, cut or not, die or don’t. A knife takes the decision out of your hand and puts it in the world and it never goes back."
Fiction based futuristic or technological advances.
Todd Hewitt is the only boy remaining in Prentisstown, a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks, in an ever-present torrent of ‘Noise’. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man when his adoptive parents Ben and Cillian force him to flee just as a major war breaks out. With only his dog, Manchee, who's voice he can hear too, for company. On the way, he meets his first girl, Viola who instead of noise, gives off an eery silence that Todd does not understand. They run from the Prentisstown army in search of Haven, the biggest town in New World, that will protect them from the approaching army. But when they arrive at Haven they find that they arrived to late and fall straight into the hands of Prentisstown's army.

Todd and Viola both think they don't believe in hope, but they both found themselves heading towards Haven without the slightest idea of what they might find.
“Hope may be the thing that pulls you forward, may be the thing that keeps you going, but that it's dangerous, that it's painful and risky, that it's making a dare in the world and when has the world ever let us win a dare?”
"The Noise is a man unfiltered, and without a filter, a man is just chaos walking."
This describes how a war is inevitable in a world where every mans thoughts are broadcast for everyone to hear.
It is set on a planet that has been colonised by a small group of Christian settlers from "old world". The settlers have some high technology, but are mostly subsistence farmers. There is a naturally occurring germ on new world that makes all men thoughts audible. The settlers blamed this germ on the native spackle and started a war which killed many of them off. New world has one sun and two moons and takes 64 years to get to from old world in a 12 month year.
was part of a scouting party sent ahead by a group of new settlers. Her ship crashed and her parents perished. She is 13 years old in old world years (12 months). When Todd first meets her he is overwhelmed by her silence as he has never heard a person without noise. Viola escapes Aaron with Todd only to be shot at the end of the book by junior Prentiss, the mayors son.
is the antagonist. Originally Prentisstown's preacher he becomes obsessed with getting Todd to kill him as a sacrifice. Aaron believed that if he was the sacrifice he would become a saint and Todd would become a man. Aaron follows Todd and Viola until Viola eventually kills him .
"One man's life was given over to a boy
to end, all on his own
A man dies, a man is born." pg 449
"being this close to her silence is like my heart breaking all over the place. I can feel it, like it's pulling me down into a bottomless pit, like it's calling for me to just fall and fall and fall."
Ben & Cillian
- Todd's adoptive parents after his mother and father were killed
- forced Prentisstown into war. Becomes self-proclaimed president of new world after taking over Haven
Davy Prentiss Jr.
- The son of mayor Prentiss, he is a cold hearted character who shoots Viola. He is only a few months older then Todd.
"I won't officially become a man for thirty more days. I've lived 12 years of 13 long months." pg 4
"never mind plugging your ears, it don't help at all" pg 17
This describes how never ending the noise is.
"The swamp is the only place anywhere
near prentisstown where you can have half a
break from all the noise that men spill outta theirselves." pg 5
the atmosphere in the knife of never letting go is dangerous and violent. Todd and Viola are constantly on the run from the army and Aaron and this makes for a dark and suspensful mood.
Most of new world is uncolonised forest or ocean.
The settlers are only on one continent of the world
and have built their towns leading out from haven. The spackle hadn't built many buildings an such when they lived there before the settlers.
"We're walking across the wild fields south-east of the town, those ones that slope down to the river and head on towards the swamp." pg 2
The knife of never letting go fits into the science fiction genre through the use of aliens, the noise germ, animals having the ability to talk, black apples, new medical advances like synthetic human tissue bandages and new advanced technologies such as space travel through alternate universes, the ability to freeze an organism in time and automatic campfire boxes.
"I take the knife from it's sheath and i keep it in my hand as we move along fast
"what's on todd?" Manchee keeps barking, which is his version of "what's going on"
" I dont know, Manchee. Shutup so I can think."
- Todd's dog. Manchee can talk, but as he is a dog most of what he says is unremarkable. Todd originally doesn't want him but when Aaron kills him Todd is upset and guilty.
