corn syrup, glycerin or detergent? What do we want to learn: We want to learn if adding light corn syrup, glycerin, or detergent to a bubble mixture, will improve how long the bubble lasts. Hypothesis: If glycerin is added to the bubble

last longer because glycerin is a
thick substance which means the
substance will not evaporate as
fast therefore the glycerin
bubble will last longer. Materials Glass mason jars with lids or bowls
Measuring cups and spoons
Liquid dishwasher soap
Glycerin small bottle(at pharmacy)
Light corn syrup
Pipe cleaners or bubble wand
Stopwatch 1. First, make your bubble solutions, and store them in clearly labeled glass mason jars. Use one jar for each different solution and label with the formula using a permanent marker. Here are three basic solutions to try, but notice that the total volume of the solution is kept consistent: Solution #1 detergent only Solution #2 detergent + glycerin Solution #3 detergent + corn syrup 2. Now make a pipe cleaner wand for each solution. Pinch a pipe cleaner in the middle and give it a kink. Bend one half of the pipe cleaner into a circle and twist together at the center. Repeat with the other two pipe cleaners, and check that all three circles are the same diameter. 3. Go outside and test your bubble solutions. Blow a bubble and catch it on your wand. Immediately start the stopwatch and time how long the bubble lasts. This will take some practice, so try it out on some extra solution before you start! Procedure 4.Repeat the experiment as many times as possible for each solution.

39 sec. Resources: sciencebuddies.org conclusion: Our problem was: Does adding glycerin,corn syrup, or detergent, affect how long the bubbles last? Our hypothesis was: If glycerin is added to a bubble solution , then the glycerin bubble will last longer. How the project is done is to make the bubble solution and put them in the jars or bowls, next you dip the pipe cleaner( in the shape of a bubble wand )into the bubble solution and blow. Catch a bubble and start your stop watch. Once it pops you continue blowing and catching for as many trials as you want for each solution. The data that our project collected was: for detergent trial 1 the bubble lasted 7 minutes and 29 seconds, trial 2 was 3 minutes and 12 seconds, trial 3 was 6 minutes and 37 seconds. corn syrup and detergent's trial 1 lasted 7 seconds, trial 2 was 4 seconds, trial 3 was 9 seconds. Glycerin and detergent's trial 1 lasted 2 minutes and 19 seconds, trial 2 lasted 1 minute and 5 seconds, and trial 3 lasted 3 minutes and 39 seconds. paragraph 1 Conclusion:
paragraph 2: Our hypothesis was: If glycerin is added to the bubble solution, then the bubble will last longer.Detergent ended up lasting the longest because if you were to compare the thickness of glycerin, detergent, and light corn syrup, you could tell that detergent was a lot thicker then the others. Therefore, detergent was so thick, it couldn't evaporate fast. Our hypothesis didn't support our data, but glycerin was in 2nd place! Maybe the data came out like it did because bubbles pop when the solutions evaporate. Conclusion:
paragraph 3 Our data did not support our hypothesis. Our data shows that detergent can last longer then the light corn syrup and glycerin. Some things that went wrong were: people popping bubbles(*cough*...Kassidy),so we had to blow a lot of bubbles. Some things that could have gone are not starting and ending the stopwatch quick enough, maybe temperature can effect the bubble. One problem was not keeping track of the bubble when it popped( you get bored sitting around waiting for a bubble to pop), but every time that happened we just blew more bubbles until we were sure our data was right. To improve the experiment you could give exact measurements of materials needed.
