PROJECT LOON
What is project loon?

Project Loon is a network of balloons travelling in the stratosphere , designed to connect people in rural and remote areas.

THE TECHNOLOGY
Project Loon balloons float in the stratosphere, twice as high as airplanes and the weather.
Loon balloons go where they’re needed by rising or descending into a layer of wind blowing in the desired direction of travel.
People can connect to the balloon network using a special Internet antenna attached to their building.
WHERE LOON HAS BEEN
Project Loon began in June 2013 with an experimental pilot in New Zealand, where a small group of Project Loon pioneers tested Loon technology.
Where loon is going...
Began with thirty balloons in New Zealand’s South Island .
Successful in beaming internet to a small group of pilot testers.

Since then pilot testing has expanded. They have now scaled up the whole process.

They are able to launch dozens a balloon a day for every crane they have today.

Done in partnership with local ISP's in the country to provide 3G like speeds.

Talks with Indian Govt for allowing pilot testing.
Speculations on partnership with BSNL.

HOW LOON WORKS
Project Loon uses software algorithms to determine where its balloons need to go.

HOW LOON IS DESIGNED
(envelop)
A good balloon is able to last upto 100s of days. When a balloon is ready to be taken out of service, balloon is brought down to Earth in a controlled descent.
HOW LOON IS DESIGNED
(solar panels)
The solar array is mounted at a steep angle to effectively capture sunlight on short winter days at higher latitudes .It is able to produce approximately 100 Watts of power in full sun.
HOW LOON IS DESIGNED
A small box containing the balloon’s electronics hangs underneath the inflated envelope. It contains circuit boards that control the system-to communicate with other balloons and with Internet antennas on the ground, and lithium ion batteries to store solar power.
