Transcript of Fire Emergency Protocol for RAs

What to do in a EMERGENCY
How will I know if there is a Fire Emergency?
Fire panel will sound
Fire alarm throughout the building will sound
Strobe lights will flash

OR
Smoke detectors will sound

In the case of the fire system sounding throughout the building....
Check the fire panel for more information
Call Public Safety
Call the RD on Call
Evacuate the building**
I called the RD on Call, now what?
Fire Drills
There are two types of Fire Drills conducted by Residence Life each semester:
Announced Fire Drill on first day of classes (August 19th at 10:30PM)
Unannounced Fire Drill scheduled at a later date.
All staff members will meet at a location designated by the RD
RD will give RAs assignments (clearing the building or crowd control)
If you are clearing the building, you should proceed to your assigned floor, open doors and check for people in rooms. People who do not exit during a drill should be documented for follow-up by the RD.
If you are working crowd control, you should insure that all residents exit the building to the designated safe area. Residents should remain in this area until the RD gives the all-clear.
Evacuation: When to get out and when to get residents....
If there is an ANNOUNCED DRILL, then you follow the instructions of your RD or the RD on Call.
If there is NOT an announced drill, you follow evacuation procedures as you would in a normal fire emergency.
Proceed to the nearest exit.
Call other RAs who may be in the building to check their location. Inform them that this is NOT a drill.
Get residents to the designated safe areas until the building is cleared by Public Safety and/or Lumpkin County Fire.
Unannounced Fire Drill
The RD will pull the fire alarm or set off the panel (RAs will NOT be aware of when this will occur).
RD will notify all RAs of the building that this is a drill (via GroupMe or text or another means set up by the RD).
Any RA in the building should report to the desk/lobby to receive an assignment.
Each RA will be placed in an area for crowd control. Room checks will be done at the discretion of the RD of the building.
If you are working crowd control, you should insure that all residents exit the building to the designated safe area. Residents should remain in this area until the RD gives the all-clear.
Designated Safe Areas
Donovan Hall: parking lots adjacent to the building (in parking spaces only).
Lewis/Lewis Annex: across the street from the building on the drill field or in the grassy area next to Lewis Annex near Donovan.
North Georgia Suites: in the parking lot across from the building.
Owen Hall: in the parking spaces beyond the 2nd full row of cars or in the area near the dumpster on the South end of the building
Walker Drive: in the parking area in front of the electrical shop
Patriot Hall: parking lots adjacent to the building (in parking spaces only).
In the case of the
smoke detectors sounding in one
room or apartment....
Check the apartment for source of the smoke.
If a fire is discovered, call Public Safety.
If fire is small, use the nearest fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
If fire is overwhelming, exit immediately and pull fire alarm to alert residents to exit the building.
If no source can be found, call Public Safety to report the issue.
Call the RD on Call.
DO NOT BLOCK ROADS!

Emergency vehicles will need clear access to the building. If students are blocking roads, kindly ask them to move between cars in parking lots or to another safe area so that emergency vehicles may pass.
Final Reminders
Don't be a hero!
If there is a fire, make your way to the nearest exit, knocking on doors as you go.
RAs should NOT attempt fight a large fire. If a small extinguisher (provided in all halls) will not extinguish the flame, call for help!
ALWAYS call the RD on Call for informational purposes.
