-Israel is a democratic country with a parliamentary democracy. The Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu (in his third term), is the head of the state. Just like the U.S., Israel has three branches of government; Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary.
-Israel also has a president, Shimon Peres (elected in 2007), but the president, unlike the U.S., serves more as "apolitical ceremonial figurehead role" with most of the power in the hands of the Prime Minister. Presidents are elected by the Knesset for one seven year term.
-The Knesset is the legislative branch and elects the Prime Minister and President, passes laws and approves the cabinet (for the Executive branch).
According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, the religious affiliation of the Israeli population in 2011 was:
Israel is a home to some holy sites including Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.
"The state of Israel... it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions" (Israel's Declaration of Establishment)
Israel has a technically advanced market economy. Its imports include raw materials, crude oil, and military technology. Its exports include cut diamonds, and high-technology equipment. The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 led to a brief recession in Israel's economy yet it bounced back quicker than most economies of comparable size and type. Israel has many high tech companies but also thriving small firms. In 2010, Israel joined the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). OECD helps government tackle economic challenges of a globalized economy.

Antisemitism has increased significantly in Europe since 2000, with significant increases in verbal attacks against Jews and vandalism such as graffiti, fire bombings of Jewish schools, desecration of synagogues and cemeteries. Those incidents took place not only in France and Germany, where antisemitic incidents are the highest in Europe but also in counties like Belgium, Austria and the United Kingdom. In those countries, physical assaults against Jews including beatings, stabbings and other violence, increased markedly, in a number of cases resulting in serious injury and even death. Moreover, the Netherlands and Sweden have also had consistently high rates of antisemitic attacks since 2000
Law Of Return
Israel was founded to provide a national home, safe from persecution, to the Jewish people. Although Israeli law explicitly grants equal civil rights to all citizens regardless of religion, ethnicity, or other heritage, it gives preferential treatment in certain aspects to individuals who fall within the criteria mandated by the Law of Return.
Preferential treatment is given to Jews and their relatives who seek to immigrate to Israel. This serves to increase the Jewish population and provides asylum to people who face religious discrimination in the countries they emigrate from.
