Resolution and file formats for web images need to be much smaller than for print images so that they can load quickly.

Saving Images for Web
A few steps that will give your images the best shot at accurate web rendering :
JPEG: they are best used for photographs. In contrast to GIF image, a JPEG can contain 16.7 million colors. However, they cannot be made transparent and cannot be animated. Their extension is .jpg or .jpeg

GIF: best used for line drawings containing mostly solid tones and simple images such as clip art. The maximum number of colors in a GIF file is 256. Their extension is . gif
Types of Image File Formats
PNG: combine the best of GIF and JPEG images and will be a replacement for GIF images in the future. It can support millions of colors, variable transparency and use lossless compression.

TIF: its lossless compression, which is considered the highest quality format for commercial work. TIF does anything from 1bit- 48 bit color RGB, CMYK, LAB, or Indexed color
So what is the best image size?
The image size 606 px wide and 400 px high. Somewhere around 400-500 pixels high is pretty safe for most situations and commonly used.

Image Size for Facebook
When posting to Facebook you have two options.

1. To show the images as large as possible on Facebook, make the long size of your image
2048px

2. If you would prefer to keep your images looking nicely but in a smaller size make the long side
960px
Summary
Make sure to find good sources of images (flickr, google images..etc)
Edit and resize images if needed(photoshop)
Use appropriate sizing depending on the criteria
Save images in right file formats (jpg,png,gif,tif etc.)
What is a high resolution photo?
High resolution photos are required for sharp reproduction in our publications
otherwise the printing quality is very poor. Pictures should be taken at the
highest resolution setting on the camera.
