The ashes of 12
Katniss Everdeen has survived her 2nd Hunger Games, but this time it means war. There was a plan among half of the victors to keep Katniss alive and to break out of the Arena and rebel against the Capitol. The other Victors, including Katniss and Peeta, knew nothing about it. 15 minutes after Katniss's Grand Finale, when she blew up the Arena, the Capitol bombed District 12. After finding out about the plan, Peeta's capture, the existence of District 13, and how the Capitol bombed her District, and the war against the Capitol, she is in shock. Katniss's and Gale's family has survived along with other villagers. She then goes to her District, where she finds it destroyed. This event changed her life forever. Katniss feels guilty, mad, and depressed. Seeing her old home, the people, and the whole District in ashes really changed her. This makes her want justice.
District 13 saved Katniss for one main reason, so she could become the Mockingjay. The Mockingjay is the symbol of the rebellion and they want her to be the leader of the rebellion. At first, she is indecisive because she is scared that she may loose her loved ones. But she wants to help the other Districts and she wants President Snow to go down. This is a very difficult time for her. She went through a traumatic experience and now she has to make an important decision.
Becoming the Mockingjay
Katniss made her decision. She will become the Mockingjay. She will be the face of the rebellion. Katniss decided to do this so she could save Peeta, rescue the other victors, and kill President Snow. Katniss suffered so much because of him, and she wasn't going to let him get away with it. Since she is now the Mockingjay, she has to film Propos, which are like commercials that warn Citizens about the Capitol. These Propos featured Katniss and were aired to the entire population of Panem. Filming them was difficult for Katniss, since she isn't good on camera. Becoming the Mockingjay was an important event in her life because this decision affected her future.

Filming the propos was hard for Katniss. So the team decided to film her in action. The plan was to put her in combat with bodyguards that consisted of Gale, Boggs, and two other soldiers, and the camera crew filming her. So they sent her to District 8. When she arrived, what Katniss saw was truly shocking. A hospital filled with injured and dead citizens of 8. All of the patients recognized her and considered her a hero! But then the Capitol came and dropped bombs throughout the whole District. This didn't stop Katniss from fighting back. Tired and injured she was able to fight. This was a big event in Katniss's life because not only did she witnessed what the Capitol did to those innocent citizens, she saw what they're capable of doing to win the war.
"..and the bombs begin to fall. I'm blown of my feet..."

"Fire is Catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!"

After Peeta went on National Television and warned Katniss and District 13 about an upcoming attack, he was able to save Katniss and the whole underground District of 13. He was a hero! It was clear that he wasn't on the Capitol's side as thought earlier. So 13 decided to send in troops to rescue Peeta and the other captured tributes. Gale volunteered to be one of those troops. Katniss later found out about the Rescue Mission and wanted to be part of it herself, but it was too late. They had already left. She was left sad and worried. Katniss loves both Gale and Peeta. If something happened to both of them, she would be devastated.
"Today I might lose both of them" (Page 166)
After worrying so much about Peeta and Gale, Katniss receives the news. The rescue mission was successful and both Peeta and Gale are alright. This made her feel relieved. She couldn't wait to see Peeta! When they finally saw each other, the unthinkable happened. Peeta tried to kill Katniss! The Capitol "hijacked" Peeta messing with his memory and made Katniss look like the enemy. Not only does he hate her, he wants her dead. This was a very depressing event in Katniss's life because seeing someone she loves insult her and seeing her as a monster was very tough for Katniss.
"My lips are just forming his name when his fingers lock around my throat."

Katniss was sent to District 2 because of Peeta. Katniss just couldn't take him. While at 2, 13 planned an attack on the Nut, the Capitol's military command center. When the attack occurred, it was clear that the Rebels won, but the fighting continued. So to calm down the fighting, Katniss had to make a speech. The speech was also aired on television. At first, the speech was going great, people were listening carefully. But at the end, someone shot Katniss. This was an unforgettable event in her life because not only did she get shot, she changed people's opinion about the Capitol and showed them how evil President Snow really is.
"I look to the screen, hoping to see them recording some wave of reconciliation going through the crowd. Instead I watch myself get shot on Television"
(Page 217)
Now it's time to attack the Capitol. Katniss has waited so long for this. But she receives the news that she won't be doing any fighting. This upsets her. She wasn't going to stay behind and wait! She wants to capture and kill Snow! So in order for that to happen she will need to start training. Johanna also wanted to be part of the action and starts training too. Both Johanna and Katniss work and help each other get through training. This event tested Katniss's determination. It showed how bad she wanted to fight in the rebellion.
"I throw myself into training with a vengeance"
(Page 246)
At last, Katniss and Johanna finished their training. After training comes the final test to determine if you are capable of being a soldier. Katniss was nervous at first, but she was able to past. Johanna wasn't so lucky. In her final test she had a mental breakdown! She wasn't able to pass her test. Katniss goes to see her and Johanna makes her promise her that she will kill President Snow. This event was very important because she will now be able to fight in the rebellion and she is a step closer to destroying the Capitol. She also saw the damage the Capitol has done to other people.
Suddenly, she has my wrist in an iron grip. "You have to kill him, Katniss."
"Dont worry"
(Page 255)
So much chaos and fighting has gone on in the Capitol. Part of Katniss's Squad is either dead or nowhere to be found. She is on her own. Her main objective was to go to President Snow's mansion and get in. She was a block away when she saw Prim, her little sister helping the injured children. She ran to her. Katniss ran as fast as she could. She was so close when parachute bombs went off. Prim is dead and the girl on fire is on fire.
President Snow wasn't Katniss' s only enemy. President Coin was too. After President Snow was captured, the rebels won the war. The Capitol had been taken down! Katniss, who had been severely burn because of the explosion was in a huge depression. She witness her sister die. Soon both Katniss and Snow talk and he assures her that he didn't order the explosion that killed Prim. This makes Katniss wonder if it was Coin. She tries to investigate more. The day of Snow's execution comes. Katniss has the privilege of shooting the arrow that kills him. Instead she kill Coin.
The point of my arrow shifts upward. I release the string. And President Coin collapses over the side of the balcony and plunges to the ground. Dead.
(Page 372)
At the end, Katniss was sent home to District 12. She wasn't the only one. Haymitch along with the surviving citizens of 12 also went back. At first, Katniss went into a deep depression. She was alone. But Peeta came back. He had made a huge recovery. Soon they both realized they needed each other. They both went through so much. At the end, they both had each other.
"The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that"
(Page 388)
"Because for just a moment, she catches sight of me, her lips form her name. And that's when the rest of parachutes go off."
