Welcome to this Online Lesson.
Demonstrate the use of the kinetic molecular theory to explain noticeable characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases at the particle level.
Models are a mentally visual way of linking theory with experiment, and they guide research by being simplified representations of an imagined reality that enable predictions to be developed and tested by experiment.
The main ideas in this model are:

• All matter is made up of tiny particles.


• The particles of matter are always moving.


• The particles have spaces between them.


• Adding heat to matter makes the particles move faster.
Scientists find the particle model useful for two reasons. First, it
provides a reasonable explanation for the behavior of matter
. Second, it presents a very important idea:
the particles of matter are always moving
.
Activity
A change in state, or phase change, happens when a substance turns from one phase to another by the addition or removal of energy, usually kinetic energy in the form of heat.
Now you have to consider a room where the environmental temperature is about 23ºC. Look at the chart in the activity sheet and consider the environmental temperature. Write if the substance is gas, liquid or solid.
