an allusion to Bulfinch's Mythology, a famous collection of Greek myths. Jem is kidding, of course, but his reference to Bullfinch's Mythology is another indication of how much of a reader Scout has always been.

History Connection: The reference to “nothing to fear but fear itself” is an allusion to FDR’s inaugural speech given on March 4, 1933. The beginning of his address is copied below. Closely read this passage for important details and connections to TKM.
I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our people impel. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance… I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

Part 2 of a fictional piece shows the characters living in the world. The action of the plot deepens the reader’s understanding of the characters. In the novel, the reader begins to understand multiple layers of the plot. As you accumulate details about how the main character interacts with other characters, consider what this shows about the main character.

Dead Verbs- lets us know an action has taken place, but it doesn’t provide a detailed picture of the action.
Dead Verbs suck the life out of writing, making it boring and bland.
Rewrite your sentence with a new word that "paints a picture" in the reader's mind. (Get it, PAINTS a picture?! hehe)
