To avoid rebellion, Britain
passed the

Still has ties to Britain & the Queen
Created the
Dominion of Canada:
def. a territory that governs itself while staying tied to the colonizing country (Britain)
During World War I, Canada proved it could be independent from Britain.
From World War II on, Canada saw a huge growth in economy, agriculture, technology and industry.
In 1931 Britain allowed this; though the two still remain linked.
Native peoples are called

The First Nations.

EX: Immigrants are 70% of all labor force growth
Quebec:
French is the official language in Quebec (
81%, 1st language
)

1980 & 1995--people of Quebec voted whether or not to
secede

Both votes were in favor of staying Canadian
Last vote--49.4% voted to secede; 50.6% voted to stay Canadian…wow!
How would Quebec "leaving" affected Canada?
Growing economy: lots of resources, high
literacy rate

NAFTA:
Trade agreement between US, Canada and Mexico.

Profits from trade 1/3 of the economy!
Population: 35 million
Most people in Canada live along the CAN/US border.
