SINCE PERMANENT MEMBERS OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL CAN VETO ANY DECISION INFLUENCES OF THE UNITED NATIONS THE UN HELPS SPEED UP THE INDEPENDENCE OF COUNTRIES THAT DO NOT GOVERN THEMSELVES CANADA HAS BEEN AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN THE UN SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1945 AND ASSISTED IN DRAFTING THE UNITED NATIONS CHRTER TODAY, MOST OF THE UN'S WORK IS DEVELOPMENT IN POORER COUNTRIES AND HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE WE HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN EVERY UN PEACEKEEPING OPERATION AND ALSO HELP TO SUSTAIN A CONSTRUCTIVE CONTRIBUTION TO ALL AREAS OF THE UNITED NATIONS CANADA CONTRIBUTES TO ASPECTS OF THE UN SUCH AS HUMAN RIGHTS, PEACE, AND SECURITY AS WELL AS SOCIA, ECONOMIC AND ENVIROMENTAL AFFAIRS THE UN EASES TENSIONS AND ORGANIZES NEGOTIATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL CRISES CRITICISM of the UNITED NATIONS WE ARE THE 7TH LARGEST CONTRIBUTOR OUT OF ALL MEMBERS OF STATE, DONATING $28 MILLION ANNUALLY UNITED NATIONS THE UN'S SECURITY COUNCIL RARELY MAKES DESICIONS BECAUSE THE PERMANENT MEMBERS CAN VETO SECURITY ACTION THE UNITED NATIONS ESTABLISHED THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE IN 1981, DEVOTED TO STRENGTHENING IDEAS OF PEACE AMONG NATIONS AND PEOPLE THE UN DOES MANY THINGS TO HELP BENEFIT US AND OUR COMMUNITY IN THE FIRST TEN YEARS AFTER THE UN'S FOUNDING, RUSSIA USED THE VETO 79 TIMES. UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPERS WERE ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT IN HAITI, CONGO, AND SUDAN THEY PROMOTE GENDER QUALITY AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN OVER 85% OF THE UNITED NATIONS IS FUNDED BY ONLY 20 COUNTRIES- AND THE US PROVIDES 1/5 OF THE UN'S TOTAL BUDGET.
