Conclusion
Conduct a risk analysis to identify the risks to your organization.

A risk analysis will help determine the safeguards, policies, and procedures your organization needs.

Perform a risk analysis periodically and whenever there is a new mobile device, a lost or stolen device, or suspected compromised health information.

After conducting a risk analysis, document:
1. Which mobile devices are being used to communicate with your organization’s internal networks or system

2. What information is accessed, received, stored, and transmitted by or with the mobile device

3. HHS OCR HIPAA Security Series Basics of Risk Analysis and Risk Management

Develop, Document, and Implement
Mobile Device Management
Restrictions on Mobile Device Use
Misuse of Mobile Devices
Recovery/Deactivation of Mobile Mobile Device Training

Train
organization should train its workforce so that they understand the organization’s mobile device policies and procedures and how to follow them.

1. Risks (threats and vulnerabilities) when using mobile devices for work
2. How to secure mobile devices
3. How to protect and secure health information
4. How to avoid mistakes when using mobile devices

Decide whether mobile devices will be used
to access
receive
transmit
store patients’ health information
used as part of the organization’s internal networks

Understand the risks to your organization before you decide to allow the use of mobile devices.

A lost mobile device
A stolen mobile device
Inadvertently downloading viruses or other malware
Unintentional disclosure to unauthorized users when sharing mobile devices with friends, family and/or coworkers
Using an unsecured Wi-Fi network.

• Technical capacity—whether a technology is safe, accurate, and reliable (e.g., how do transmitted digital images compare to films?)

• Diagnostic accuracy—whether a technology contributes to a correct diagnosis (e.g., was an initial dermatology diagnosis by a primary care clinician corrected after review by a dermatologist?)

• Diagnostic impact—whether a technology provides diagnostic information that is useful in making a diagnosis (e.g. is a face-to-face consultation still necessary?)

•Therapeutic impact—whether a technology influences patient management or therapy

• Patient outcome—whether a technology improves patients' health and well-being

Ease of use

Easy updates

fluidity of use

Input options- such as a touch-screen combined with an optional wirelessly-connected keyboard

• If an alternative is more costly and performs less well (e.g., produces fewer health benefits), it is undesirable.

• If an alternative is more costly and performs as well, it is undesirable.

• If an alternative is less costly and performs better, it should be used.

• If an alternative is less costly and performs as well, it should be used.
In other cases, cost-effectiveness results are more equivocal and judgments will be more subjective.

• If an alternative is more costly and performs better, are the benefits gained worth the extra costs?

• If an alternative is less costly and performs less well, are the savings worth the health benefits foregone?

Clinician Acceptance
If clinicians are not comfortable with the technology, or judge that the technology decreases their control over patient care, they may avoid using intelligent mobile devices
Efficiency, Effectiveness and User Satisfaction survey

Perform a usability test - Assess the App’s Usability with Typical Clinical Scenarios
