11/5 and 11/6: Flight of the King
Before the Revolution
Authority was based on the king ruling by God's will and tradition.
War was the game of kings
Conquest is expected
The people serve the king without questioning authority
Phase 1: The Constitutional Monarchy
Phase 2 Committee of Public Safety
Twelve men ruled France and the "terror" of the guillotine was used to rid the state of her enemies
Rule was based on a loose concept of Democracy that was related to Rousseau's "general will"
French Revolution
Shared power was a view similar to that of the American Revolution
The "Declaration of the Rights of Man" was written and included the value of free speech
"Egalite, fraternite, and liberte" outlined the goals of the Revolution

Reign of Terror
Definition: from about March, 1793, to July, 1794, during which many persons were ruthlessly executed by the ruling faction.
