My Cultural Heritage
What did the Irish bring to the American Culture?
Claim: The Irish culture has given America new foods, a new holiday, new inventions and filled lots of needed jobs.
The Irish brought new inventions
The Irish contributed lots of inventions that we still use today like the automobile for example. Henry Ford was the son of a Irish immigrant and he changed the word with his one idea of the automobile. The Irish also invented the submarine that is much used today. That was invented by John Philip Holland what was from Clare.
They Gave Us
St. Patrick's Day
Up until the mid 20th century, St. Patrick's Day was a minor religious holiday in Ireland, where families attended church and then have a large meal. In keeping with Irish immigrants desire to maintain ethnic solidarity , they turned St.Patrick's Day into an annual celebration of the Irish Heritage.
The Irish brought a rich culinary tradition that they adapted to the foods available in America. The Irish brought the idea/recipe of having ham, salt pork, or bacon with cabbage and potatoes. But when they arrived in America they found that pork was more expensive than beef they replaced it with corned beef which people went crazy for.
The Irish Filled Needed Jobs
The Irish Helped build American railroads and industries because they were willing to work for lower wages making them the better chose over someone not wanting to work for less.
