His mother is a New York park administrator.
His father is a public school administrator.
His older brother is Daniel 'Danny' Simmons. He is an abstract expressionist painter. He is also the co-founder and Chairman of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation which provides disadvantaged urban youth with arts access and education.
His brother is also Joseph Lloyd Simmons. But is know by the stage name Rev. Run or DJ Run. He was a member in Run-D.M.C and is a practicing minister, known as Reverend Run.
His ex-wife was Kimora Lee. They met in 1992 and dated for four years then married on December 20, 1998.
His daughters are Ming Lee and Aoki Lee.
Russel Wendell Simmons was born October 4, 1957 in Queens, New York.
He grew up in the Hollis area of Queens and spent some of his teen years as a street hustler.
In 1975, he graduated from August Martin High school.
Then he briefly attended City Collage of New York (CCNY) in Harlem to study sociology.
He left school to promote local musicians, including his friend Curtis Walker (Kurtis Blow) and Run-D.M.C.
He has his own credit card company
He is the creator of the clothing fashion line Phat Farm and American Classics
