Transcript of Endocrine System
What is it?
The endocrine system
is in charge of ________________ processes that occur within the body.
What does it look like?
The endocrine system is composed of
A "pea sized" gland found underneath the brain.
ENDORPHINS: Regulate emotions
GROWTH HORMONE: Regulates growth!
The pancreas secretes
Why do you want it?
Your body wants to be balanced or stable...
Controls how fast you use food and change it into energy.
Too much (hyperthyroidism): heart speeds up, weight loss, increased body temperature, nervous/anxious
Not enough (hypothyroidism): heart rate is low, weight gain, decreased body temperature, depressed
Too much insulin can cause someone to have very

A person with not enough insulin will have very
This is called being
A person with an overactive pituitary gland can be overly excited, nervous or anxious. ...
It can also cause a person to grow too fast, and cause gigantism.
A person with an underactive pituitary gland makes them emotionally detached or depressed.
Also, it could cause someone to grow too slow... and cause dwarfism.
The adrenaline gland produced the hormone adrenaline.
Adrenaline regulates the heart rate and one's "fight or flight response."
Without enough adrenaline, someone does not have the ability to respond to a crisis in an emergency situation.
People who do not make enough adrenaline are often depressed and gain weight at an abnormal rate.
Someone with too much adrenaline tends to be very excitable, experience anxiety and weight loss.
Some people become "adrenaline junkies" because they enjoy the feeling of the natural "high" or state of excitement.
The thyroid gland produces a number of different hormones.
Their function is to regulate the body's cellular metabolism (or energy production.)
An overactive thyroid could cause someone to get nervous, anxious, stressed, lose weight, and have a high heart beat for no apparent reason.
An underactive thyroid, which is common, can cause someone to be tired, cause weight gain, and be depressed.
Glucagon: Raises your blood sugar.
Insulin: Lowers your blood sugar.

The combination of _______________________ in a body.
Such processes can include growth and development, emotions,
and sexual functions.
In science, this is called "maintaining _____________________."
...we call it being ________________.
