Increasing the sample population to create a holistic view/concept by comparing new and old site/cases insuring that categories hold true. Helps to substantiate your research.

Used to generate theory when none or little exists.
Analyze collections of textual data (interviews, transcripts, historical sources)
Constant comparison between theory and data - ZIGZAG.
Establishes relationships between concrete descriptions and abstract categories.
Theoretical sampling: 20-30 participants

A category: a unit of information composed of events, happenings and occurrences
Constant comparative: method of data analysis – the “zigzag” of research activity between observation & theory development/analysis
Explores the relationship between codes/concepts
Aiming to identify a singe category as the CENTRAL PHENOMENON in order to build a story
How much research is needed before the empirical study?
How do we focus the research problem?
Coding: How do we induce the theory from the narrative?
The amount of time needed – when is enough information enough?
The ultimate criterion for sample size where the general rule is that when building theory, data should be gathered until each category is completely satiated or satisfied.
The question a researcher asks themselves is "Does adding more participants add more valuable information?" (Harley et al, 2009)
Used to develop a theoretical explanation of human behavior grounded in data collected from those exhibiting that behavior (Harley et al, 2009)
